Portuguese director drops out of Israel Festival over treatment of Palestinians

A Portuguese theater director has canceled his attendance at a major cultural festival opening in Jerusalem this week over Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.

Tiago Rodrigues said he was dropping out of the Israel Festival so that his work will not “condone and promote a government that deliberately violates human rights.”

Rodrigues had been set to stage his work “By Heart” twice during the festival, which runs from May 24 until June 9.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, he said he was joining a global cultural boycott of Israel that has seen some artists and musicians refuse to perform in Israel.

Rodrigues wrote: “Although I am strongly against the oppression of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government…I accepted [an invitation to perform] because I believe that the people of a country and its political administration are not the same thing,” he said.

However, it later came to his attention that official communications for the festival noted the event would celebrate Israel’s 70th year of independence.

“The mention of this celebration by the festival is not accompanied by a single word of criticism to the State of Israel for its conduct towards Palestinians during the last 70 years.”

New flotilla set to leave Denmark in bid to break blockade on Gaza

A new flotilla of ships intent on breaking Israel’s 10-year blockade of the Gaza Strip was due to set sail on Tuesday from the Danish port of Copenhagen.

The two-month journey will see the ships stopping off at several European ports to take part in activities supporting the Palestinians’ so-called “March of Return.”

It is under the “March of Return” banner that more than 100 Palestinians have been killed in violent clashes with Israeli security forces along the border fence since March 30 — most of them members of the Hamas terror group, according to the group itself.

Israel says the demonstrations, originally claimed to be nonviolent, are being orchestrated by Hamas as cover for attempted attacks and breaches of the border fence.

The flotilla has been planned by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an umbrella of organizations aiming to end the closure.

The ships will carry names such as “Return” (al-Awda), “Freedom,” and “Palestine.”

Among those on board will be Prof. Ismail Nazari, chairman of Malaysia’s boycott Israel campaign; Charlie Andreason of Sweden, who spent time in Israeli detention for his role on the Marianne, a Swedish-flagged trawler leading a flotilla of boats in June 2015; Spanish Jewish activist Zohar Shamir Chamberlain; and Heather Milton-Lightening, an activist for indigenous Canadians.

Wow, a very rare appearance. Ismael Haniyeh was out in the open like that? Isn't that a bit unusual and risky for him?

He's usually not an target but the understandings on the border and between Egypt, Palestinians and Israeli's is that this would not lead up to military hostilities so it shouldn't be risky. In the past it was riskier for those politicians and Israel had a habit of targeting them but seem to have moved away from that as of recent.

Israeli airstrikes target Gaza seaport and alleged Hamas tunnel site

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces carried out air strikes targeting Gaza City’s seaport and an alleged Hamas military site in the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday morning.

Locals told Ma’an that explosions were heard three times across Gaza City as Israeli planes targeted the seaport.

Witnesses said that the airstrikes targeted two boats.

Teams of the Gaza Civil Defense forces rushed to put out the fire that erupted after the airstrike.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said that no injuries were reported.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the airstrikes to Ma’an, saying that an underground tunnel and naval targets that belonged to Hamas were targeted in the strike, which happened around 4 a.m.

The spokesperson said “the strikes were carried out in response to ongoing attempts to dispatch drones and kites for the purpose of setting Israeli territories on fire.”

West Bank:

13 Palestinians injured during Israeli raid on Ramallah-area refugee camp

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Thirteen Palestinians were injured and at least five were detained during a predawn raid Monday carried out by Israeli forces in the Ramallah-area al-Amari refugee camp in the central occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported the injuries as light and said the injured were transferred to the Palestine Medical Center in Ramallah for treatment. The nature of the injuries remained unknown

Israeli forces raided the refugee camp in large numbers, causing clashes to erupt with local youth. Sources added that soldiers prevented ambulances from entering the refugee camp during the raid.

Forces were carrying out the large scale raid in search of those responsible for dropping a marble slab on an Israeli soldier last week, resulting in the soldier’s death.

Several houses in the refugee camp were reportedly turned into military outposts by soldiers, while one building was demolished and by an Israeli bulldozer.

Gaza to set off new flotilla to break Israeli siege

The Gaza Strip will set off a new flotilla of ships on Tuesday in a bid to break the 12-year-long Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory.

“This trip will carry the hopes and dreams of the Palestinian people for freedom,” Salah Abdul-Ati, a member of a Palestinian committee tasked with breaking the siege, told a press conference in the Gaza City on Sunday.

He said the first ship will set sail on Tuesday morning, with a number of injured Gazans and patients aboard.

He, however, did not specify the first stop of the ship.

According to Abdul-Ati, Israeli forces twice attacked boats and ships seeking to break the Israeli siege on Gaza in the past two weeks.

He called on the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority to lift “penalties on the Gaza people to boost their steadfastness and ease the humanitarian crisis caused by the blockade”.

He also appealed to the international community to pressure Israel to lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip and on international NGOs to provide protection to anti-siege ships.

Tuesday’s Gaza flotilla will coincide with the 8th anniversary of an Israeli attack on the Turkish “Mavi Marmara” flotilla, in which nine Turkish activists were killed when the Israeli navy attacked the vessel in international waters. A tenth activist died nearly four years later, succumbing to injuries sustained during the raid.

This was expected after repetitive and daily Israeli aerial and artillery attacks on Gaza that killed 4 Palestinians just in the past two days and critically injured several more. It's not going to be acceptable for Israel to continue bombing the Strip over peaceful demonstrations near the border.

Even after killing 4 Palestinians in last two days, they insist on another air strike campaign before dawn which led to a mild response for now by the Palestinian armed factions.

Barrage of Rockets Fired at Southern Israel; Gaza Reports IDF Attack

Rocket alert sirens sounded in a number of southern Israeli communities, including Eshkol, Shaar Hanegev and Sdot Negev, on Tuesday morning. Residents in the vicinity reported sounds of explosions.

This is the first rocket fired from the Gaza Strip since a new wave of mass Palestinian protests began in Gaza on March 30.

The Islamic Jihad threatened this week to respond to an IDF attack on Hamas positions in Gaza, in which three of its fighters were killed: "We will not give up our duty to the dead, I know how we will respond to this serious escalation." The military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, Al-Quds Brigades, said "The Zionist enemy can not dictate a new formula in which it will harm our people without a painful response."
