Brazilian Navy's Scorpene-class submarine Riachuelo S-40 (Image: Naval Group)
The Brazilian Navy will receive its first Scorpene-class submarine Riachuelo S-40 at the Itaguaí Naval Complex in Rio.
Brazilian shipyard Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN), a subsidiary of Naval Group and Odebarecht delivered the submarine to the Brazilian Navy on Friday.
Riachuelo S-40 is the first of four Scorpene-class submarines that are currently being constructed for the navy under a submarine development programme known as Prosub.
The 20-year Prosub programme was initially established in 2009 and also involves the development of another navy vessel, which is expected to be powered by nuclear propulsion. The submarines are being built by the ICN (41%) and Odebrecht (59%).
Riachuelo S-40 is expected to be commissioned with the Brazilian Navy in 2020.
