The Brazilian Army is soon scheduled to evaluate five prototypes of the 7.62x51 mm NATO configuration of the IA2 assault rifle, built by state-owned IMBEL (Indústria de Material Bélico do Brasil), and additional prototypes could be requested for testing, a source told IHS Jane's .

After evaluation is complete by the Army Evaluation Center and approval is given by higher echelons, a pilot batch is expected to be acquired for further trials and then serial production units could be ordered. Three prototypes of the carbine version started evaluation in September.

IMBEL's development of the IA2 7.62 mm was self-funded after requirements were issued by Brazilian Ministry of Defence and the Brazilian Army. It includes Picatinny rails; a cold-forged 389 mm barrel; front and rear sights; flash suppressor; 20-round magazine; and polymer foldable or retractable buttstock. It shoots in automatic and semi-automatic firing modes.

The gas-operated weapon is 920 mm long, weighs 4.05 kg without accessories and magazine, and has an effective range of 300 m and fire rate of 780 rounds-per-minute.
