BrahMos Corp. is looking to develop a new anti-ship missile with a smaller diameter and lighter weight than the present BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The proposal, tentatively called BrahMos-3, is aimed at putting together a potent anti-ship/anti-surface missile for the Indian Navy's MiG-29K and IAF MMRCA.

Revealing plans for the BrahMos-3 today at Defexpo, BrahMos CEO Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai said the first test-firing of a BrahMos from a modified Su-30MKI (modifications by HAL) would take place by early next year.

The BrahMos-2, a concept scramjet-based hypersonic version of the missile has begun development, and the programme aims at a first test in five years, Dr Pillai says. The long-awaited underwater-launched version of the BrahMos is expected to undergo its first test within 2012, and is understood to be ready in all respects.

The BrahMos recently conducted two successful tests of the army land attack variant of the missile, in which it performed supersonic steep dives in both tests.

Maaza a gaya. this news made my day. With Brahmos 3 on MMRCA and Mig29Ks. We can take any one head on. It does seem Chinese threat is very real one and Indian Babus and Soniaji doesn't want to take any chances.

i'm sure that the anti-aircraft carrier version(air launched) wont make a difference with its current range.
but sub launched version still can ,but where we gona fit this?! which sub? none of the new subs offer vertical launch.

True, but mainly because of the huge size and weight of the current brahmos version and the fact that AIP propulsion is more important for the SSKs. The indigenously build SSNs on the other side, should not only have torpedos and torpedo tube launched missiles, but vertical launchers as well, which actually makes them to SSGNs and here Brahmos is the most logical choice!

Brahmos III for Mig-29s and MRCAs will obviously won't pack the punch of the Brahmos for MKIs. Reduced weight and size on the proposed platform will take its toll on the range and payload capacity.

actual range of brahmos should be about 1000 kms.... so the one on the migs may be like 700 km and if they go for Tejas might be with range of 500 km

MAN THE SPEED ITSELF DOES MOST OF THE DAMAGE...MBDA IS MAKING Perseus. ITS JUST THEY HAVE TO CHANGE THE DESIGN. THE ACTUAL RUSSIAN VERSION WASN'T MEANT TO BE LAUNCHED BY FIGHTER JETS AND THATS WHY SU30 VERSION IS SO HEAVY. NOW IF THEY WILL GO FOR MIG29, THEY WILL HAVE TO REDESIGN THE MISSILE OR THEY WILL HAVE TO REDUCE THE RANGE TO 100-150 KM RANGE WITH SMALLER AIRFRAME ALSO.

DON'T GO IN THE FANTASY WORLD. ORIGINAL RUSSIAN MISSILE ITSELF HAS 300 KM RANGE, THEN HOW IN THE WORLD OUR BRAHMOS HAS A RANGE OF 1000 KM ??? FOR THAT THE INDIAN MISSILE (BRAHMOS) WILL HAVE TO BE LARGER IN SIZE, LARGE ENOUGH TO BE EASILY NOTICED. I CAN SEE WITH LESS WARHEAD AND MORE FUEL THE RANGE COULD BE INCREASE 50-100 KM MORE BUT THATS IT.

700 to 1000 km range is not possible with a miniature version of the missile with small motor. 250 kms range with a bigger payload for big ships should be our objective i guess.

Exactly, it's actually a more capable anti ship missile, above the Kh 35 but below Brahmos 1 and it's not new at all, the development was confirmed even at Defexpo 2010.
Also it might be the version of Brahmos that FGFA will carry externally as well!

The missile wasn't made to be air launched in the first place, it was a ship borne missile, later modified to ground laucnhed and air launched mode. To convert the ship borne missile into one that can be carried by aircrafts, they had to reduce its weight by a big margin. Even then only the MKI was heavy enough to carry it. Now a further weight reduction would be needed to allow it to be carried by medium weight aircrafts. Remember, the MKI is twice as heavy as the other aircrafts you mentioned.

So it is not a question of different missiles having to be made for different aircrafts. This is a missile that is being modified in different roles, to fit ships, ground launchers, heavy aircrafts and now medium ones. Most countries dont operate so many different wieght categories of aircrafts as we do. And most countries do not have aircrafts heavy enough to carry brahmos anyway.
