New British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced plans to start hiring an extra 20,000 police officers in the next few weeks, reversing cuts made under previous governments in a pitch to voters concerned about rising violent crime.

The police have suffered big staffing and funding squeezes under austerity measures by the past two Conservative-led governments.

The independent Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates the additional officers will cost STG1.1 billion a year.

"My job as prime minister is to make our streets safer," Johnson said in a statement on Thursday, a day after he replaced Theresa May as prime minister.

"People want to see more officers in their neighbourhoods, protecting the public and cutting crime."

Johnson, who pledged to increase police numbers during his leadership campaign, inherits the task of tackling a rising murder rate and growing knife attacks which have undermined the Conservatives' reputation as the party of law and order.

There are 122,000 police officers in England and Wales, down from 143,000 when the Conservative Party took power in 2010.

The whole policy has gone down like a storm here, people are happy. Yes he was part of government when the cuts were made but he's reversing and going all out now.

He's banking on the popular vote, being a main figure of Vote Leave he has to show this. The lines are blurred now in politics.

problem is, getting out of EU now doesn't seem all that glamorous. there were suddenly many voices for the break up of EU but that has subsided. He can hold another referendum! instead of undoing small level party quirks undo the mother of all f-ups.

Getting out of the EU is even more popular than ever, the Brexit party, Conservatives, elements of vote labour leave and UKIP won the greatest share in the EU elections. One referendum was held already, that's how democracy works.

May was despised by most police officers. She had been boooed in a police federation convention.

My brother who is a police officer told me every officer in his station in Sheffied loathed May.

I am guessing "Conservative Party" is more the left to the GOP here hmmm cause the Republicans here tend to be pro-cop and police in general

Yah all conservative parties outside of the US (in the west) are basically about pre-obama era democrat party. Say 90s clinton era roughly.

By US standards regular Conservatives would be decried as socialist untouchables.

With Boris brexit is done thing. Can't wait to get out of EU. I frankly regard EU as a nothing but a contrived racist project clothed in colours of acceptability.

They'd be just run of the mill centrist dems, or the "RINO" faction inside the GOP....and the typical big biz, donor types found in each party.

Very broadly comparable to conservative party in Canada.

They are not what is considered socialist in the US, that would be the far-left democrats these days. But of course the largest visible branding of the parties tend to be from their most vocal fringes etc.

Tories tend to be pro police but May was exception. She had a run in with police federation and many did not like her policies. Also the police budget cuts came during Conservative watch so things had been touch sour since. Comments like 'plebs' did not help.

Which US political group would support a 'national health service'?

Essentially that would be "medicare for all", a big expensive democrat platform these days.

Obamacare has done pretty poorly, it tried hybrid model and satisfied very few in the end.

@waz Brit-Pakistan Sajid Javid has been shifted from Home Secretary to Chancellor. That is promotion so not bad even if he missed being PM. Boris policy head will be another Brit-Pakistani madam Muniza.

I don't think any US party espouses a European style comprehensive need based health care system. Thus my comment about 'socialists'.
