Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has aired concerns over killings of Bangladeshis by India’s Border Security Force or BSF and said these do not go with “friendship”.
He urged visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who says citizens of his country are also killed along the borders, to take steps to put an end to the killings of Bangladeshis by BSF.

“I told him [Shringla] that we had decided on ‘zero killing’ along the border, but it has unfortunately increased this year,” Momen told the media after Shringla met him at his office in Dhaka on Monday.

“I also told him that they are friends to us and killings do not go with friendship,” he added.

Shringla assured Momen of steps to stop the killings, according to the foreign minister.

“He said they would try to stop this,” Momen said.

Shringla, a former high commissioner to Bangladesh, told journalists after attending an event earlier in the day that the same number of Indians as that of Bangladeshis are killed along the border but the statistics are not reflected in Bangladesh.

He identified trans-border crimes in densely populated areas and very difficult geographical terrain as the reasons behind the killings.

At least 13 Indian nationals, including a BSF member, were killed along the border last year, according to Shringla.

The number of Bangladeshis killed in BSF firing or torture was 43 last year, human rights group Ain O Salish Kendra had said.

Border Guard Bangladesh had said 11 Bangladeshis were killed along the borders until mid-February this year.

“Deaths on border are not necessarily just confined to citizens of Bangladesh. There are equal numbers of Indian citizens who were killed. Obviously, the statistics are not reflected on your side, because you are only looking at Bangladesh citizens,” Shringla said.

“And who are the causalities along the border?” he asked, pointing the finger at smuggling, trespassing and other criminal activities along the borders. “This clearly reflects criminalities know no geographical boundaries. Clearly, criminal activities take place on both sides.”

“Lately there are a lot of attacks on our border guarding forces and in many cases they have to respond to attacks on them by armed gangs,” he said.

But India “truly regrets” every death along the border, Shringla said.

“The problem I think is linked to the issues of densely populated sections of our society living close to border areas, almost along the border in many places, and very difficult geographical terrain in other places,” he said.

Shringla had pointed out at the event that a Teesta water-sharing agreement can only be finalised on the basis of consensus among stakeholders who include West Bengal state, given India’s federal system.

Momen said the Indian foreign secretary expects the signing of deals on sharing of six other rivers other than the Teesta during Modi’s visit.

India thinks it is necessary for the country to repay Bangladesh in exchange for water of the Feni river, the foreign minister said, citing Shringla.

Momen added he also discussed India’s citizenship issue with Shringla.

“I told him that many of their issues create concerns among the people of our country and the government needs to respond to the concerns. So we [government] don’t want them [India] to do anything that can make our job difficult,” he said.

“He (Shringla) replied that the issues will never affect Bangladesh in any way,” Momen added.

But I am sure that the killers don't regret although believe that death is not necessary. I would say at worst just shoot them at leg if you can't confine them!

But the trigger happy savage BSF will keep killing for pleasure I think because Indians approve it. So it's time to take proper action from Bangladesh.

Why don't we arm these folks living near the border with automatic weapons. Problem solved.

After that we will really see if number of killings go up or down...

You're welcome Mr. Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.

You already have enough heavily armed 'public servants' along the border paid by your people. What is preventing them to pull the triggers in order to protect their own bill payers ( the citizens) ?

Those public servants (BGB) are bound by govt. policy and legal precepts, and they are the agents of the govt.

Their hands are tied. They cannot violate Bangladesh govt. policy.

The BGB can't do a lot of things the average armed Bangladeshi can.

Since the BSF is engaging in rogue activity with abandon, let that be answered by our rogue citizens.

BGB will just look the other way, until the BSF decides that engaging armed Bangladeshi citizens is not worth the 'trouble'.

Look here how BSF is forcibly violating border protocol and abducting Bangladeshi fishermen by intruding more than 1 KM into Bangladesh territory, as proven by GPS equipment and reported evidence, which Bangladesh possesses in its patrol boats.

I am glad that this Shringla guy got an earful about border killings when he tried to come sell us Indian weapons.

A dose of reality is always good and need to be shown by pointing one's fingers to the eyes.

The very gall of these Sanghis !!

Your idiotic idea would just serve BSF to kill anyone who approach borders and without remorse. Where do you get such stupid ideas, Lungi?

Your foreign minister was pleading with our foreign secretary about border killings and god 'friendship?', here we have lungis on PDF trying to be all macho. Lol.

Lol. Rogue citizens will die in hundreds. Why would we bother about Bangladesh if it can't control their own citizens? Just because you stitched some chaddis, doesn't mean you are a military power to challenge India with some lungi clad half footers.

The problem is elsewhere. They have other 'pre-occupations' than protecting taxpayers. Find your 'Casino General' BGB chief and other high ups with notorious criminal Selim Prodhan. For those of you who do not know the BGB chief, look at the darkest one .

Illegal border crossing and smuggling needs to be completely stopped if we want a peaceful border.

Unrelated post. Stick to the topic please. Thx

Its an unfortunate position for Bangladesh. They are being threatened daily since BJP took over in india. The problem is that BJP is killing Muslims for not what they did but for what they are. Sooner or later BD folks will have to sit with Pakistan and China and look for a long term solution of BJP led India problem as the old secular India doesn't seem to be coming back atleast in the near future.

You would be naive to think this Bharti meant what he said.

Nah I mistakenly don't think so, I don't trust Indian snakes. I was actually making clear to some of my compatriots that what actually our FM said. Some of them believed that Momen was ashamed because of our smugglers to so called friend India!

But I just showed them and also some India trolls ( I don't mention them) that actually FM is now against Indian border killing. So as evidence I shared this that they are wrong.

Be sure mate, Indian propaganda will be failed soon. All India lovers in Bangladesh will surprisingly see the bitterness between Bangladesh and India in near future.
