Book gives flashback of Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s prediction on Afghan war

.
“I cannot forget Kayani’s reaction when we enthusiastically explained our plan to build up Afghan forces to 400,000 by 2014. His answer was swift and unequivocal: Don’t do it. ‘You will fail,’ he said.
Kayani was absolutely right the men they recruited only wanted a steady income, they had no stomach to fight the Taliban. When their paymaster left they melted far quicker than the Ice cream.

Kayani like all Pakistani generals knew how to handle the US top brass. I still remember Mike Mullens famous words against our Markhors in a US Senate hearing, they knew they were fighting a lost cause.

Kyani said it 2010. Pakistan said that in 2001.
But USA was very angry, very mad.
What to do, they don't listen to Pakistan until it really hurts. 🤷‍♂️

But your still going to have western based Pakistani burger boys who'll flip this and be like Amerika can't do any wrong and come up with weird explanations to support this failed conflict some how.

There is a big intellectual difference between the British and American population and policy makers, vast majority are pretty much stupid and these people are fed up the chain to policy making positions, etc. Sitting in University and getting a PhD in International Relations/Political Science doesn't make one an expert when you don't know the ground realty, you can learn the local customs and language but you can't emulate the thought and history of a certain people.

This is what I used to tell to my western friends In discussions.

Everybody has their favorites and some that you dislike... but I dare say... General Kayani was one of the finest minds that this Army has produced... there are trade offs everywhere... but it was him who changed the complete orientation of the system to gear and fight the scourge of TTP... focused on every small bit.. from the individual soldier's equipment to how the conventional readiness was to be ensured and improved... every procurement plan that we see today is of his making...

People under appreciate Kayani a lot and seem to give way more credit to Rahil Sharif. People only focus on success of zarbe azb, but do not look at the ground work done done by Kayani to make PA be able to execute an operation like zarb e azb (mainly to to clear NW), and also the precursor operations launched under his command such as op Rahe Rast and liberation of Swat as well. Rahil inherited a fairly popular, equipped and combat experienced army, where as Kayani got a very unpopular Army due to Musharaf, somewhat demoralized due to insurgency and Musharaf, and a conventional Army (India specific) who wasnt trained and equipped to fight insurgencies, plus the lack of funds due to PPPs corruption and treachery of likes of Hussain Haqqani making things even worse.

Wasn't Kayani the same guy on whose watch, Pakistan became a battle ground of terrorism and under whose watch MQM and non-state actors reached the pinnacle of their terrorism and then he served the coup de grace by personally delivering NRO (was the represntative of Mush the coward in negotiation between the thieves brokered by US gov't) which directly led to the restoration and resurrection of the biggest corrupt thieves and terrorists in Pakistan's history leading to a generation's worth of socioeconomic loses.

As to his prescience, any half blind laborer in Pakistan would have told you not invest in an Afghan Army. There is a pantheon of most incompetent, spineless treacherous chiefs in Pakistan Army's history, he is right up there in the holy trinity of Yahya, Mush and Kiyani.

Pakistani Generals are not mere arrogant Power maniacs, they thoroughly understand the issues and do a 360 analysis. Had the US listened to Pakistan early on, they would have come out victorious a decade ago, but arrogant people never learn

But that's only one fight in the battle. The battle is still on and unfortunately "we" do have treacherous among us but "who is who" only time will tell

Of course he had good insight, cause he really did nothing for years in COAS office, he had a lot of free time to reflect on things, Kiyani and now Bajwa are worse COAS Pakistan can hope for in crucial times.

Look wars are like cricket . Whole team works together. Everyone has some duties. Someone has to play as opener some has to play wicket keep some has to play middle order..I don't blame mushraf kayani or any other general. They were doing things as whole team. Results matter the most. And patience is supper important

Every situation requires a different approach. No one day is the same, hence our COAS have to adjust based on the situation either passive or aggressive. Had we acted like Saddam Hussain, a one track mind, we would have been finished a long time ago. We have to give them the benefit of the doubt as we don’t have all the info that formulated their strategy.
