ISLAMABAD: At least four people were killed and 30 wounded as two suicide bombers attacked a court complex in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday.

Officials said one of the attackers was killed at the entrance as policemen posted inside the complex intercepted the two while entering the highly secured area.

But the second one managed to detonate his suicide jacket full of explosives near a crowded courtroom of additional sessions judge Kulsoom Azam. The judge was among those wounded. Police officer Masood Khan Afridi said the dead included three civilians and a police officer. He said the wounded included four policemen . Witnesses said a huge explosion that shattered doors and windows of the building followed indiscriminate firing.

The complex is located next to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly and Peshawar Central jail. Police did not confirm if the target was the court or the jail next door, where hundreds of terrorists are being held.

Provincial information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain described the attack as an attempt to disrupt the national elections scheduled to be held in May. "Terrorists have attacked at a time when general elections are very near and the atmosphere for election is smooth. These terrorists have not yet found success. They will carry out more attacks ahead of elections," he said.

Monday's attack on Peshawar was the second in less than a month.
