Hi

I was wondering why "Bombay Presidency" was so called? Actually I don't understand the use of "presidency" in there. I think the province didn't have presidential system. Would you please help me with this? Thank you

Presidiencies was the name given to areas where the trading posts set up by the East India Company expanded to. There were three - Bombay,Madras & Bengal.

bombay presidency - Google Search

Till 1858 the brit presence in India emanated from these three locations. Threrafter the Crown took over direct governance of India

Bengal

Even today old regiments trace their lineage to these Presidiencies.

BTW it was the mostly the troops of the Bengal Presidiency who revolted in 1857

Thank you, third eye. But the reason for using the term "presidency" still eludes me. Why didn't they use "Bombay Governorate" instead? There would be some basis for choosing that term. Don't you think?

A Synonym of the word Presidiency is Admistration

It possibly signified an Admistrative area which it actually was.
