Boko Haram declares Islamic caliphate in Nigeria

A northeast Nigerian town seized earlier this month by Boko Haram militants has been placed under an Islamic caliphate, the group’s leader said.

“Thanks be to Allah, who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate,” Abubakar Shekau says in a 52-minute video obtained by the Agence France-Presse. “By the grace of Allah, we will not leave the town. We have come to stay.”

In the video, Mr. Shekau lauds the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who in late June declared himself “the caliph” and “leader of Muslims everywhere,” AFP reported.

It was not clear, however, if Mr. Shekau was declaring himself to be a part of Mr. Baghdadi’s caliphate or if he was referring to a separate caliphate in Nigeria.

In addition to Gwoza, Boko Haram is believed to be in control of large swathes of territory in Borno state and at least one town in neighboring Yobe state, AFP reported.

Experts said Boko Haram is closer than ever to achieving its goal of forming an Islamic state across northern Nigeria.

The Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, declared a caliphate in June after capturing vast swathes of land in northern Iraq and eastern Syria.

Baghdadi is calipha, Shekau is Emir, Al Nusra head is one more Emir, Mullah Omar of taliban is one more Emir...if I am right.

It's a well "oiled" global enterprise replete with supply of of both material and ideology, now they are adding land. I won't be surprised when taliban and Mullah Omar add big chunks of Afghanistan to Islamic caliphate.

Al Qaeda is just jealous that they couldn't accomplish what ISIS is doing so far. Surprisingly Al Zawahiri the successor of Osama hasn't say anything since.

after the IS nightmare now the boko haram one. it's a SHAME that muslims always only protest against jews (because of the antisemitic core of islam) but are silent when muslims butcher non-muslims or even thens of thousends of other muslims worldwide.

How can you denounce them as heretics? To them they are following the pure brand of Islam and I am certain that if you challenge them to a debate, they will prove that you are a heretic and that they are the true followers of Islam. The reason why I say this is because there was a debate on a television channel a few nights ago where a radical Muslim scholar from Malaysia debated against a moderate Muslim scholar from the UK. The Malaysian guy claimed that Islam promoted the killing of unbelievers whilst the Brit scholar disputed this. There were various other topics up for debate such as Jihad etc. It was clear that the Brit scholar came out beaten by the Malaysian scholar when it came to quoting from the Q'uaran and the Hadiths
