FBW was never about thrust management, it is about control surfaces. 737NG do not feature FBW. It is controlled by a mechanical system with hydraulic power assistance. Even the MAX only has FBW on the spoilers. In any case, specs for the C919 are only a estimation at this point. I don't see any reason why it would perform worse then the 737MAX and A320neo as the engine, avionics are all of the same gen. Wing surface area, aerodynamic design, and empty weight is also similar. As for range, I'm sure they can produce another trim with a larger fuel tank. Since most airlines in China is state owned, I have no doubt this plane will be successful.
Well, if it makes you happier, I am happy to rewrite my previous post and said 73&NG have Computerized Thrust Management System instead of FBW, which C919 did not have. Would that make you feel better?
And no, I would not consider C919 avionic package is at the same gen than 737MAX and A320Neo. For starter both 737Max and 320Neo both have FBW (This time it is FBW) where C919 don't. Also Engine Management system are different, as well as load structure and other issue, C919 have not even use carbon fibre composite on its airframe. That alone would shred quite a lot of weight and increase flight economy for a bit.
And finally, it's exactly what the Chinese carrier do that doom the C919, they could have invest with COMAC and get a better jetliner, but they still choose Airbus and Boeing Jet, which order C919 in a token number (not more than 20 jet) And if the Chinese carrier were to order C919 they would have done so already, it has been on sale since 2010.
I am not saying C919 is not going to sell well, again, maybe if China force its national carrier to purchase C919, yes, that would beef the number up, but at this stage, with 380 firm order and 700 MOU, C919 is losing money it's now 68 millions per plane, conservative estimation you will need to bring up to around 80 millions per plane to break even. Data estimate C919 cost 80% of Airbus and Boeing, from Boeing 737Max is at 103 millions, and A320neo at 100 millions.
