Boeing Ready to 'Make in India' fighter plane

Choppers are likely to happen if India places significant follow-on orders for the Apaches and Chinooks- with the IA getting its own fleet of Apaches this looks likely.

The fighter jet production line is pie in the sky stuff, he is saying it for the sake of it- no one is going to rule out such avenues in his position but it simply isn't going to happen UNLESS Boeing shifts the entire production line to India to meet third party orders. There is simply NO way the IAF is going to induct 2 different types of fighters for the same requirement- MMRCA, anything thinking they will is living in a fantasyland.

Once the Rafale deal is signed that is that- no hope for anyone else.

Judging from follow on IAF requirements and IA requirements for apache
& mature helicopter industry , I think apache s are more likely to get assembled in India .

Chinooks also have chance because Tata factor .. But less numbers won't help.

I'd say both have a good chance of being made in India but, yes, the Apache has a greater chance because of the higher number of (almost guaranteed) follow-on orders that are going to come for the AH-64. The IA is already committed to at least 39 (this will increase) and the 22 unit order for the IAF comes with a follow-on unit clause for 11 more units which would likely be exercised.

Having said that, the demand for Chinooks will be quite considerable in the long term- they will play a huge role for the BRO in the NE, they will provide some serious logistical teeth to the MSC and for these two tasking alone 15 a/c is not enough let alone providing coverage for the rest of the nation (Western sectors). Then there is always the possibility of extra Chinooks for the SOCOM that is being raised (they are looking at both the MH-47 and CV-22). However the Chinook orders will be more staggered than Apache orders I feel but the ultimate fleet will be quite vast. A production line in India would negate any risk of closure that burnt the IAF so badly with their C-17 demand.

You mean like the MMRCA tender that the new government was supposed to approve by the end of last year?

Do you really have to state the obvious every time? Indian defence deals were super fast before the wretched Bofors scandal broke out. The greatest tragedy about the scandal was that the Bofors was/is/will remain one of the best artillery guns ever built. Bofors rocked the Indian Parliament and Indian defence deals were never the same again.

Defence deals are now deliberately prolonged to "ensure no corruption". The bureaucracy's idea is that by prolonging the deal they can go into investigation of any possible double-dealing which is a joke because middle men are still involved in defence deals.

MMRCA will haunt IAF for decades to come. IAF would have got stronger than any other air force in Asia with 126 Rafales in its wing. Now even the 36 Rafales look a distant dream and we are stuck with the blasted LCA.

Third sir, we are not buying aloo n piyaaj. For a entire new deal, that is worth BILLIONS, to finish in less than a year, is a feat in itself.

How many years do you think a government needs to come to a decision, ten years is not enough for your evaluation process? If so then you need to relook your evaluation process.
