Boeing cuts deal with Indian defense corp.
MUMBAI, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A major Indian engineering corporation is joining up with Boeing and EADS, a report said Friday.
The Economic Times reported from Mumbai Larsen and Toubro had drawn up an ambitious plan for long-term high-tech cooperation in aerospace and advanced technologies with the St. Louis-based Boeing and with the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company.
The report said L&T had developed a strategy to create two new defense and aerospace component manufacturing operations in Coimbatore in India's Tamil Nadu state and in Talegaon in Maharashtra state. It said Boeing and EADS had already said they would use components that the L&T new units would manufacture for use in their own products.
"L&T has acquired 300 acres of land in Coimbatore for a precision manufacturing complex, the initial construction of which will take a year. The Talegaon plant will be specifically meant for supporting the weapons system," the Economic Times cited one company source as saying.
The reported noted that in February, L&T had produced memoranda of understanding with Boeing and EADS at the Aero India Aerospace show in Bangalore. "The idea was to establish a long-term and profitable relationship to address the needs of the aerospace and defense markets in India and around the world," the report said.
The Economic Times noted that L&T's defense engineering division already produces rocket launchers for the Indian Army.
The potential for Boeing and EADS could be enormous because India's high-tech advanced industrial sector has lagged far behind the excellence of its pure research scientists for decades.
