QUETTA: Habib Jalib Baloch, secretary general of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal, was gunned down outside his residence early on Wednesday by unidentified men on a motorcycle.

Jalib was sitting outside his brother’s shop – close to his residence – when armed men on a motorcycle sprayed him with bullets, killing him instantly. According to preliminary reports, Jalib received nine bullet injuries.

His relatives took him to the Sandeman Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The doctors believe Jalib had died while he was being brought to the hospital.

Violence erupted across Balochistan as soon as the news of Jalib’s death was confirmed, when BNP-M workers in Quetta took Jalib’s body from the Civil Hospital to the Governor’s House and ended up at the CM Secretariat.

At the General Post Office intersection, police stopped the protesters from entering the Red Zone, where the Civil Secretariat, Governor’s House and the CM Secretariat are located. It used tear gas to disperse the crowd, while the enraged protesters retaliated by pelting stones at the police. However, after some time, the police managed to force the protesters to vacate the Red Zone.

Demonstrations spread across Quetta, where the protesters disrupted traffic by pelting stones at vehicles and forced shops and business centres to close. They also forced the shopkeepers to join the protests. All major roads and intersections of the city wore a deserted look, forcing the people to remain in their homes all day.

Most traffic signals had been damaged during the violent protests, while personnel of police and the Frontier Corps were withdrawn from the roads, due to the protesters’ anger against the government and its security agencies.

The demonstrations spread to other parts of Balochistan as well, mainly in Mastung, Kalat, Naushki, Khuzdar, Wadh, Nal, Surab, Dera Murad Jamali, Dera Allahyar, Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, Turbat, Panjgur, Kharan, Dalbandin, Nokkundi and several other areas.

Almost all major highways linking Balochistan with Sindh, and roads leading to Iran, remained closed due to the protests.

Educational institutes: Moreover, all educational institutes were closed. Education Department sources said educational activities in Balochistan would be suspended for two days.

Meanwhile, the BNP-M announced a three-day shutter-down and wheel-jam strike, as well as 40 days of mourning to condemn Jalib’s assassination.

Reportedly, the police has released a sketch of Jalib’s murderer. It said the sketch had been prepared with the help of eyewitnesses. It has also announced a reward of Rs 1 million for help leading to the killer’s arrest.

Balochistan shuts to protest Habib Jalib’s murder
By Muhammad Zafar

QUETTA: Life remained paralysed across Balochistan for the second consecutive day on Thursday in protest against the assassination of Baloch nationalist leader Habib Jalib on Wednesday morning in Quetta.

All major commercial establishments, business centres and shops remained closed, while streets in the commercial districts remained deserted.

The RCD and other highways had been blocked from various directions, as people put up barricades on them and held protests. The 2,000-kilometre long RCD, linking Karachi with Zahidan, remained closed at different points.

Police used tear gas shells to disperse enraged protesters on the double road, as they disrupted the traffic by setting tyres on fire. The protesters also pelted buildings and passing vehicles with stones, as some shops in the area remained open. Large contingents of police and Anti-Terrorism Force had been deployed in the city, however, no major incident took place in Quetta except some clashes between law enforcement agencies and protesters.

Police arrested 40 people from different parts of the city, a senior police officer told Daily Times, adding that they were later released.

All educational institutes were also closed across the province. According to an official statement, the institutes would remain closed for two more days.
