Chittagong, Dec 28 (bdnews24.com) - Police on Sunday night seized Tk 41 lakh from a car owned by brother-in-law of Shamsul Alam, a four-party candidate in the port city.
Police said they could only detain driver Khorshed Alam, who told them that the money was to be distributed among voters of Chittagong-8 seat that Alam was vying for.
The brother-in-law, identified as 'Javed', and two others, 'Saiful' and 'Mohiuddin', were also in the car but managed to flee, police quoted the driver as telling them.
"During questioning, driver Khorshed told us that the three were taking the money to distribute among voters," assistant police commissioner Babul Akhter told bdnews24.com.
The driver could not say where exactly they were heading to.
The police officer said the car left the BNP candidate's campaign headquarters at city's Jamalkhan at around 11pm and was stopped by police at Andarkilla minutes later.
Javed, Mohiuddin and Saiful were quick to flee the scene, according to the driver's statements to police.
Police said they found the money in a carton kept in the boot of the car.
In another incident, police seized a microbus from Khepupara of Hathajari Upazila in the district on allegation of distributing sarees and blankets among voters on behalf of four-party allaince candidate Wahidul Alam, who is running for Chittagong-4 constituency.
Supporters of Jatiya Party candidate Anisul Islam Mahmud of the same constituency alleged that Wahidul's supporters had been distributing sarees and blankets.
They also informed the police about the microbus.
Local people seized the microbus but no arrest had been made from the microbus, neither were any sarees or blankets found in it, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station Alamgir Hossain said.
