Blame Congress ‘hand’, not ‘foreign hand’

By A Surya Prakash

Having cynically pursued vote-bank politics for over 60 years at the cost of national security and India’s unity and integrity, the Congress is now once again trying to divert attention from its monstrous follies in Assam and rest of the country by blaming the ‘foreign hand’ for the sectarian violence in the north-eastern State and its consequential fallout in other parts of the country.

While it is true that Pakistan is ill-disposed towards India since 1947, the primary blame for the radicalisation of Muslim youth in India and for the ethnic and inter-religious strife in Assam and some other parts of the country must rest squarely on Congress shoulders. Beginning with the days of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress has made minorityism its credo, promoted Muslim sectarianism and wrecked the secular equilibrium envisaged by our founding fathers.

This trend actually acquired enormous proportions after Mrs Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister. Under her leadership, the Congress instilled fear in the Muslim community in order to transform this community’s votes into a solid vote bank. Is it not strange that there were frequent communal flare-ups leading to large-scale Muslim casualties in all the States ruled by the Congress when she was Prime Minister?

After her, her son Rajiv Gandhi gave a fillip to Muslim radicalisation by amending the law to upturn the court’s verdict in the Shah Bano case. Also, it was Rajiv Gandhi who opened the locks to the temple inside the Babri structure and sent his Home Minister Buta Singh to participate in the shilanyas for a Ram Mandir at this site. If India’s social stability got disturbed consequent to these actions, it was the Congress ‘hand’ at work.

Let us now turn to Assam. The steady infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims into this border State, especially after the late-1960s, is well chronicled. Several people have warned the Union Government of the terrible consequences that this may have on the unity and integrity of India. But the concerns of all nationalists had no impact on the Congress which only saw the infiltrators as additions to its vote bank.

As a result, the infiltrators have acquired demographic advantage in many districts in that State and are now indulging in pillage and plunder to oust the locals. Lt Gen SK Sinha, while he was Governor of Assam, warned in his report of November 1998 to the President that if this demographic invasion was not checked, “The illegal migrants would swamp the Assamese people and eventually sever the North-East land mass from the rest of India.”

Given the latest developments in that State, this will soon happen. But, make no mistake, it is the despicable Congress ‘hand’ and not the ‘foreign hand’ that will be responsible for this terrible denouement.

The latest example of how the Indian hand is destabilising the country and crippling governance comes from Mumbai, capital of a State ruled by the Congress-NCP Alliance. Following the Assam clashes, some Muslim groups organised a protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Sections of the crowd went berserk, indulged in violence, set fire to police and media vehicles and even molested women police constables.

But, this was not all. They attacked the Amar Jyoti Jawan Memorial and destroyed it. Photographs of the violence showed protesters kicking the memorial and hammering it with lathis.

Patriotic citizens were horrified, but even 10 days after the event the police have not got down to nabbing the culprits, leading to unsavoury conclusions about the State Government’s sectarian approach to law enforcement. This provoked the Maharastra Navnirman Samiti to take out a massive rally in protest against the August 11 violence and the indifferent attitude of the Government.

With the Congress at the helm, do we need Pakistan to destabilise us?

Therefore, while Pakistan is doing its two-penny bit to destabilise us through transmission of morphed images to our fellow citizens who happen to be Muslims and threatening SMSs to persons from the north-east of the country, let us not forget that the biggest destabiliser is in our midst and the long ‘Hand’ of this entity runs from Kokrajhar to Kolar and is capable of big mischief.

Finally, a word about how ‘foreign hand’ entered our political lexicon in a big way. This happened in the early-1970s when Mrs Indira Gandhi began blaming the ‘foreign hand’ for all her failures, be it social, economic or administrative.

All agitations in the 1970s were inspired by a ‘foreign hand’ according to her and this was the weapon she used against all her opponents. She also brought the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act to deal firmly with smugglers and foreign exchange manipulators and the ‘foreign hand’ that was destabilising the economy.

It later turned out – when the Gupta Commission Report was tabled in Parliament – that there was actually a ‘foreign hand’ within her household which had violated FERA with impunity on four counts!

It's not only the damn Congress but all political parties in India including the BJP, that portrays a holier-than-thou attitude, who are responsible for this mess.

Vote bank politics has screwed India. We don't need enemies to hurt India. These clowns are doing a good job of it.
