Ahmedabad: Narendra Modi continues to hold sway in Gujarat as the BJP on Saturday swept the local body polls. The win follows their sweep in the corporation elections. Interestingly over 100 Muslim candidates fielded by the BJP won with Modi claiming it a victory of his development politics.
The semi-urban and rural voters of Gujarat voted the BJP to power in elections held for district panchayat, nagarpalika and taluka panchayat. The Congress party's traditional votebank - Muslims, triabls and poor - have also voted for the BJP
"Over 100 Muslim candidates have won on a BJP ticket. Muslim candidates have crossed a century of winners. Christians and Muslims are voting for the BJP. They are disillusioned with votebank politics. Muslims have accepted BJP's development politics. This is a turning point in India's political journey," said Modi following the victory.
Over 100 Muslim BJP candidates won in the just concluded polls, an indicator of a marked change in the way the community sees Modi. Recently, the BJP won the Kathlal Assembly seat for the first time in 58 years. Interestingly 65 per cent of Kathlal's voters are Muslims. The BJP had fielded a record number of Muslim candidates in the municipal corporation elections too.
But the Congress blamed the EVM's for the drubbing. With its traditional votebank tribals and minorities having deserted it, GPCC chief Siddharth Patel had no other option than to quit.
"I accept moral responsibility for this defeat and I have submitted my resignation to party President Sonia Gandhi," said Patel.
So is this the beginning of the end of votebank politics and the beginning of an era of development politics in Gujarat? At least Narendra Modi believes so.
