They are right. India should not have English as their de facto official language.

If the Government of West Bengal wants to communicate with the Government of Tamil Nadu, why don't they use an Indian language instead of English? Why is it that Manmohan Singh addresses the nation using English?

If Hindi is too politically sensitive, then why not Sanskrit? It is shocking that there are only 14,000 Indians who can write Sanskrit.

In China, everybody can write in the same language with which Sun Tzu wrote the Art of War over 2500 years ago. The characters are still the same as they were before.

And yet in another thread, an Indian member was accusing China of giving up our culture! Have you heard Hu Jintao once speaking English in public? I don't think he has spoken English ever, in public or private.

The writings of Sun Tzu and Confucius several thousand years ago are written in the same Chinese characters we use today.

There are of course some differences in grammar and meanings of some characters, but apart from that it is the same and can be picked up and read straight away.

I on the other hand am perfectly happy to get into a one-on-one argument with a member who I used to respect, but now I don't.

If it doesn't bother you that your official language is Western, your highest leader is a white European, and that your system is Western, then that's up to you. Why should I care?

If you don't like what I post then don't read it.

Confucius and Sun Tzu' writings are not written in Mandarin. Stop confusing writing system with language.

Confucius, Sun Tzu and all ancient texts are written in Classical Chinese (文言文). Its not a spoken language but written only. It can be recited in any dialect whether its Mandarin or Cantonese.

Modern day China uses Mandarin written standard (Baihua 白話).

From Confucius time to the 1920s, the official written language was Classical Chinese. All government texts and documents were written in it. Only vulgar novels and plays were written in the spoken language (Baihua). Then in the 1920s the May Fourth Movement, which was against traditional Chinese culture and wanted to trash it (some people even wanted to change China's official language to Esperanto) caused the government to change the official language to Baihua.

However Classical Chinese is still taught in schools in Taiwan and I heard its taught in mainland schools too, so all Chinese are able to read classical Chinese along with Mandarin and at least write some of it.

That's why I never actually used the word "Mandarin" in connection with Sun Tzu or Confucius.

Look at my posts again. The posts you quoted above.

I said Chinese characters.

It's the only language of a common for a country that has god knows how many different languages. Bet this guy also wants to go and say Urdu is a hijacked form of Hindi.

Wow, this is interesting.

What is the percentage of the indian population that speaks Sanskrit as either a first or a second language? This is like some ultra nationalist in Europe telling people to abandon English / French and instead learn Latin.

Since independence india has tried to stich together a common language, Hindi using tv, Bollywood etc, 50 years of effort, and where this would disadvantage the local population there is the option of English. By making English, a common language of all Indians (in addition to Hindi), has brought great benefits, a booming IT / BPO industry and dynamic international business and banking sector.

Now some people want start all over again, through away all those advantages. Think about it, why do you think the Chinese have not cornered the international service sector markets in the same way india has?

After independence our leaders (m.rahman and his cabinet), made a fatal flawed decision, they pushed Bengali only education system, neglecting the language of commerce and business, English. Now because of that decision, we are suffering, where as we might have had the same advantages in these new industries india now has.

Don't make our mistakes.

dont worry, they are not coming to power, and even if they do they cant reverse flow of time.. this was tried during infancy of our country, when our "great" socialist leaders got carried away, but now even a poor person knows what is good for his kids.

Did you know that Hebrew died as an everyday spoken language in 200 AD?

By the time Israel was formed in the 19th century, they decided to resurrect it as their own native language.

Now has this hurt their research or their science? No, not at all.

Hong Kong as well, we have the number 1 University in Asia. Our native language has not hurt us.

If you had dozens & you picked one arbitrarily, it might have.

Not if all those dozen langauges have their root in Sanskrit and which also happens to be a very logical and scientific language with a long history and very close links to cultural, religious and social identity of India.

It doesn't matter that they have roots in Sanskrit (I don't believe many agree that Dravidian languages have root in Sanskrit, influence certainly but not root), what matters is whether that perception is shared. If it isn't, then all that will flow is bitterness & hate. Pointless. If it was widely acceptable, it would have been accepted. It hasn't been, sometimes best not to labour too much.

Absolutely!! At the time of need, it's not advisable to sit with sentiments. It needs to be prioritized which is more important and help more in growth. English is a Global language and because of English as the official language India has achieved quite a bit of success which won't have been possible otherwise.
