City to grab global attention for 19 days

The Hindu : Cities / Hyderabad : City to grab global attention for 19 days

For 19 days starting October 1, Hyderabad is gearing up to grab global attention as it turns into a platform for brainstorming on global biodiversity concerns and efforts to find apt solutions.

Representatives from 193 countries, including several heads of nations are expected here for the 11th edition of the Conference of Parties (CoP-11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which began its journey from Nassau, Bahamas in 1994.

More than 8,000 delegates and a host of other associated personnel for the conference are expected to descend here for a series of events that range from deliberations and debates to exhibitions, lined up over a span of 19 days.

Three levels

In a broader sense, the convention has been split in three levels with the Meeting of Parties from October 1 to 5 followed by the main convention from October 8 to 19. Towards the end, a high level segment scheduled with the presence of several heads of nations has been earmarked between October 17 and 19.

Cutting across boundaries, the participants of the high profile gathering will seek to ponder on earlier initiatives and look forward to finding means of safeguarding biodiversity.

Nagoya Protocol

Among several other aspects, consideration of the status of the Nagoya Protocol (the last meet held in Japan), in-depth review on island biodiversity, support mechanism for ecosystem restoration, marine and coastal biodiversity and climate change, are on the agenda.

Other issues framed for the event include issues pertaining to dry land, forest, inland waters, mountain and agricultural biodiversity, protected areas and sustainable use of biodiversity.

To trace out the history of CBD, it emanated from concerns over threat to species and ecosystems and acknowledging importance of biological diversity for present and future generations.

The first steps were led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and an ad hoc Working Group of Experts on Biological Diversity was called in the year 1988 to work out an international convention.

The process took shape with the Nairobi Conference for the ‘Adoption of the Agreed Text of the CBD’ and the Convention came into force in December 1993. From Nassau to Nagoya, a total of 10 CoP meetings have been held in various parts of the globe so far and a total of 299 procedural and substantive decisions taken during them.
