If Bangladesh bans the Jamat then the following will take place.

1. The Pakistani branch of the party will feel partially amputated and will feel demoralize and will realize that if it happens in Bangladesh it can happen in Pakistan.

2. The intelligentsia in Pakistan will definitely at least entertain the idea of banning the Jamat, who by the way are hated by many of the Islamic scholars there e.g. Deobandis, Barelvis, Ahlee Hadith etc.

3. The Jamat may (may not) feel the need to moderate itself to avoid a Bangladesh-style closure (if that ever did happen).

However as far as I am concerned this is an internal Pakistani matter and for Pakistanis to decide, so I won't say too much.

It will never happen in Pakistan, us Pakistanis enjoy being oppressed over and over and over again.

You are underestimating the power of corruption.The corruption that i am talking about is not the one that is done by officials but a more subtle and omnipresent and omnipotent type which is corruption of character which large swath of population suffers from.

Indian politicians have fine tuned the art of bribing voters with mixer grinders and laptops for votes.

AL could bribe it's way to power and is well placed to do so also as it do not have a right wing/urban middle class/conservative vote block to pander to.

Also because of the very reason that AL is power hungry,i believe that nothing would come out of this banning ordinance.

Jamat has several benefits for Hasina.

1.It keeps right wing block divided.Even when fighting as a coalition,it is difficult for supporters of a party to vote for another one.

2.Jammat could become a source of highly motivated cadre which would be licking it's would and would be highly dangerous.

3.Jammat's funding source would become part of BNP thus increasing it's war chest.

4.Jamat provides a cause-celebre for AL.With jamat gone it would lose an important emotional rallying point.

5.Jamatis would provide muscle to BNP at national level.



Thus it is highly doubtful that Sheikh hasina is serious about banning jamat.She probably is trying to test waters and engineer an schism between BNP and Jamat by forcing BNP to take stand against them.




Politics is not done by emotions.



Unless someone has communal reasons,it is natural for Bangladesh and India to have a healthy relationship.A lot of stuff peddled on this forum is insane bullsh1t.A year ago some poster has started a thread regarding "Whether Bangladesh should try mineral exploration as India is turning BD into a desert" while ignoring that Bangladesh receives rainfall of the magnitude of equatorial rain forest and thus cannot be converted into desert even if India stops all water and mineral exploration is pointless for Bangladesh as it's bedrock is buried under miles of alluvial soil.

I am by no means an expert on Bangladeshi politics, I would say people like @eastwatch and Iajdani know far more than me. I merely share my opinions, though I present a far saner and realistic version of things than the *you know who* club (the group that must not be mentioned or given a name) on this forum.

So from my somewhat limited knowledge it is point 4 that is really Hasina's loss if Jamat is banned. Hasina has no sincere hatred for rezakars and their war crimes as she was in an alliance with these criminals a few years back and there are plenty of rezakars in her party now. She engages in Jamat bashing to appeal to mass sentiment and gain votes. She is a selfish politician and not an idealist.

If Jamat were to be banned (forever and not just a temporary ban with a revocation of such a ban by a future government, btw a ctg wouldn't necessarily unban them as the Election comission has already said they would be de-registered if such legislation is passed) then the question is what will Hasina and co do to use as a rallying cause?

1. Probably attack Jamati elements in the BNP if they then joined.
2. Attack any new Jamati outfit formed in another name.

Who knows.

One "advantage" that the Awami League has against the BNP and Jamat is they are far more ruthless and unscrupolous than the other two, though having said that the then BNP govt of Khaleda did try to murder Hasina and other Awamis in an attempt a few years ago.

Bangladesh's problems partially stem from the fact that in a country with around 40% illiteracy (which will be blamed on RAW, Indian secret agents, Hindutva and Hammer-fist by the *you know who* group) the masses are easily manipulated by corrupt politicians.

The political culture is heavily polarized and involves violence.

Any sincere person (like myself) who tries to criticize any party and put constructive ideas forward will immediately be attacked by partisans of any or all of the Awami/BNP/JI group of parties, as we see here on this forum.

The fundamental long-term answer is greater education, more media coverage and a very important national emphasis on not involving violence in politics. It will take time but all these phenomena are happening and will continue.
