Jute and Textiles Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui said on Tuesday that a bill seeking a ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing would be placed in the current parliament in line with the demand of the ongoing nationwide mass movement.

2 Siddiqui, also a Presidium Member of the ruling Awami League, said the bill was being drafted.

Deputy Leader of Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury backed his comment and said the demand for banning the party, which officially opposed the creation of Bangladesh as an independent country in 1971, was indeed of many political parties.

“But now it has become a national demand,” she said.

“We are discussing the issue, a process is on. It will take some time,” she said.

The leaders made the statement when they joined Tuesday’s three-minute silence at the Central Shaheed Minar demanding execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla and other war criminals.

Millions of people across the country joined their hands and expressed their solidarity with the Shahbagh movement by holding a three-minute silence at 4pm on Tuesday to press for execution of all war criminals.

On Monday, the protesters from the centre stage at Shahbagh, named as Ganajagaran Manch, called upon the countrymen to stand three minutes in silence.

Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, also a Presidium Member of the Awami League, said a national consensus was needed to ban the party.

Banning this sick and evil organization will happen one day insha'Allah either that or their complete reform or marginalization. They have been getting weaker decade by decade and are now just 4.6% of the electorate and will only decrease.

They have influence disproportionate to their actual support as they recieve foreign (e.g. Arab and others) funding.

That too will hopefully end insha'Allah.

So much for the nautanki of Democracy in Bangladesh. Remove opposition by banning politcal parties.:D

If they are that weak, why do you fear them and want to ban them:D

You have asked a good and valid question.

1. Wanting to ban them is more emotional rather than anything else. They are an evil party that participated in war crimes and are - despite what they say publically - covertly seek to end Bangladesh as an independent state. Many countries ban parties that are opposed to the fundamental values of that state or seek to abolish that state itself.

Anyway Jamat are not a mainstream organization but an extremist organization involved in war crimes and communal tension.

2. Banning may not be possible or even counter-productive, then in that case the only way to deal with them is education. Educating people about the nature of Maudoodi, of the Jamat itself and also educating others in the Muslim world such as Arabs, moderate Pakistanis, Turks etc about the true reality of this party.

One thing is totally clear though, we cannot endorse violence from any party be it the Awami League (most violent), BNP and Jamat.

Anyway Jamat are getting weaker as Bangladesh's HDI gets stronger and standards of living increase and women's empowerment gets stronger and stronger.

Recently met with some renowned islamic scholars. They are also in favor of banning jamat. Jamat dont follow actual islam as they said. They show islam to innocent people as the way they want to show. They follow ihudi style in bengle by gaining more wealth than islam. They are very extreme fundamentalists. Whenever they go in power terrorism grows.
Its time to leave behind those fundamentalists and time to move forward.

1. Most Islamic scholars in Bangladesh are against Jamat.

2. The party are known for corruption e.g. their leaders took money earmarked for Rohingyas and put it in their own pockets according to comments I read by @asad71 bhai.

3. Most of the lower cadres are attracted to them by positive and admirable things, but they are naive to the fact that the senior leadership of Jamat are corrupt and interested in power and wealth.
