Because unlike other kinds of fermentation, which are primarily monoculture (one kind of fermenting organisms), plus only one type of raw material (milk, bread, fruit) in the human (or other animals) intestine contains thousands of different types of organisms fermenting a plethora of raw material. BTW, you should smell Pont l’Eveque or Camembert de Normandy cheeses. You'll begin to appreciate the smell of your poop.

So Bill here is not wrong to promote the idea.. the US Space Shuttle uses waste water for drinking.

All water on Planet Earth is endlessly recycled. All of it. Think about that for a moment.

That is true, but the psychological idea of watching yours or another urine or faecal matter go into a machine and then be made to drink water coming out of it is difficult for most to digest if there is "fresh" water sources available to them.

Ask someone in the Sahara however, and they might eventually be inclined to it.

The process need not be watched or be visible at all. Good implementation of technology is important. Read up on how the Biosphere experiment achieved that. Now there is Biosphere II:

Or we have one more thing here in Malaysia (also in other South East Asian countries) called "Durian" (Durian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). After eating this damn fruit, even your sweat starts giving off strong smell for this fruit contains very high concentration of volatile compounds. And the smell, it is not good I tell you.
