As strategists parse the nearly 20 Indian-Americans appointed in the Biden administration, what is noteworthy are those who didn’t make it.

An Obama administration staffer Sonal Shah as well as Amit Jani, who worked on the Biden campaign team have so far been excluded, allegedly due their RSS/BJP links which has been brought into the limelight by over a dozen Indian-American organisations.

Biden’s team has people like senior diplomat Uzra Zeya who had played a role in the Devyani Khobargade case or Samira Fazili who had joined protest rallies in the US against the CAA, NRC and the Kashmir lockdown. Those with RSS/BJP links have not found a place while secular Indian-American organisations have maintained the pressure on the Biden-Harris Transition Team to keep such individuals on the sidelines, said sources.

The Democrats may have been more circumspect over accommodating pro-BJP/RSS elements in the government following renewed activism by organisations opposed to the Hindutva project and also after witnessing the fate of such candidates, added the sources.

Congressional candidate Sri Preston Kulkarni lost the elections after strident opposition from Indian-American organisations and former US Congressperson Tulsi Gabbard also lost political ground because of this reason.

Sonal Shah has served on Biden’s Unity Task Force but her father was the President of Overseas Friends of BJP-USA and is the founder of RSS-run Ekal Vidyalaya for which she has raised friends.

Jani’s may have been the case of lax vetting. Named Biden campaign’s Muslim Outreach Coordinator, he was re-appointed as National Asian American and Pacific Islander Director after it was pointed out that his family has ties with PM Modi and other BJP leaders.

In order to ensure that the Biden administration does not backtrack on excluding those with RSS/BJP links, 19 Indian-American organisations have written to Biden pointing out that many South Asian-Americans individuals with ties to far-right Hindu organisations in India are affiliated with the Democratic Party.

New Delhi: Nearly 20 Indian-Americans have been included in the Biden-led administration but individuals, known for their BJP-RSS links have been kept out.

Obama administration staffers Sonal Shah as well as Amit Jani, who worked on the Biden campaign team, have so far been excluded. Their links with far-right Hindutva organisations have been brought into the limelight by over a dozen Indian-American organisations.

Sonal Shah’s father was the president of Overseas Friends of BJP-USA and is the founder of RSS-run Ekal Vidyalaya for which she has raised funds.

Amit Jani: He was the ‘Muslim Outreach’ coordinator of ‘Name Biden’ campaign. His family reportedly has ties with PM Modi and other BJP leaders.

To ensure the Biden administration does not backtrack on excluding such elements, 19 Indian-American organisations have written to Biden pointing out that many South Asian-American individuals with ties to far-right Hindu organisations in India are affiliated with the Democratic Party.

The exclusion of BJP-RSS supporters comes in the wake of opposition from Indian-American organisations and loss of such candidates in the previous US elections.

Congressional candidate Sri Preston Kulkarni and former US Congressperson Tulsi Gabbard have lost the previous elections.

MY post was NOT pointless. Interesting, the Templars who damn near killed me said I would be alone in a world of robots who couldn't understand what I had to say, nor want to hear it. Those Templars were mean but seems they told the truth.

Biden is super anti Modi. You have to remember that Biden is from the Reagan era and sees Pakistani military as his ally with over 40+ years of engagement.

He is also not one for antognizing china specially when the Europeans have a free trade deal with China. He needs his economy moving against and that means more access to American farmers and industry to China. This will fuel American recovery.

so the modi goverment is in bad straits, India as a nation will always be important to America. I think the west would like to see India balkanized or broken into Pakistan sized countries with massive dependence on western economies

smaller Indian countries provide raw material while western economies provide industrialized expensive items like powder milk made from Indian milk

India is no doubt an important hiring against China for US strategic gains in S.A and so world wide. The recent declassified documents at-least says so. However, Biden may have also seen the Indians during violent protest come attack on Capital Hill. I think Biden administration will at-least keep the RSS Hindutva extremists out of power corridors after getting the sense that not everyone deserves to be in administration. India-US cooperation will continue but RSS type or Modi gang will be reduced after sensing that if gave a free hand, these guys are good at what they did in capitol hill riots.

Joe Biden dumped Indian-Americans with RSS/BJP links...

Netizens have begun to intensely debate the decision by Joe Biden to exclude Indian-Americans with BJP/RSS link from his new administration. The Biden-Harris administration has so far decided to snub almost all known faces, sympathetic to the BJP and the RSS, from their new team. Some analysts are of the opinion that the exclusion of Obama administration staffer Sonal Shah and Amit Jani, (who worked on the Biden campaign team) may be linked to their association with the BJP and the RSS. Noteworthy are the public utterances of both Biden and his deputy, Kamala Harris, that amply display an indication to exclude them from the new administration.

Biden’s new team includes three Kashmiri origin women namely diplomat Uzra Zeya, Samira Fazili and Aisha Shah in key positions. Zeya, who, according to The Tribune, had played a role in the Devyani Khobragade case in 2013, has been nominated to be Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights. She had quit the foreign service in 2018 in protest against the policies of the then President Donald Trump.

The hijab-clad Fazili had famously taken part in protest rallies in the US against the anti-Muslim Citizenship Amendment Act passed by the Narendra Modi government in India, the NRC and the Kashmir lockdown after the abrogation of Article 370. She has been named as the new Deputy Director of the National Economic Council at the White House.

Aisha Shah, another Kashmir-born woman, has been appointed the new Partnerships Manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy, which would be headed by Rob Flaherty, Director of Digital Strategy.

In contrast, both Sonal Shah and Amit Jani have found no favours with the Biden administration despite their years of loyalty. Sonal Shah, according to The Tribune, served on Biden’s unity task force while her father was the president of Overseas Friends of BJP-USA and is the founder of RSS-run Ekal Vidyalaya. She too reportedly raised funds for Ekal Vidyalaya in the past.

Jani was re-appointed as National Asian American and Pacific Islander Director by the Biden campaign team in the run-up to the election even after it was pointed out that his family had ties with PM Modi and other BJP leaders. However, the Biden administration now concedes that his appointment may have been due to lax vetting.

Indian-American journalist, Sadanand Dhume wrote on Twitter, “This story claiming that Biden is shunning Democrats seen to have links with the RSS strikes me as premature. Many important positions remain unannounced. But it’s certainly likely that the BJP’s domestic agenda will harm some Indian-American careers.”
Dhume is not wrong given that both Biden and Harris have repeatedly voiced their concerns on the divisive politics pushed forward by the Narendra Modi government against religious minorities in India. In his Agenda for Muslim-American Communities, Biden had explicitly condemned the measures that the government of India took ‘with the implementation and aftermath of the National Register of Citizens in Assam and the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act into law.’ He had called them ‘inconsistent with the country’s long tradition of secularism and with sustaining a multi-ethnic and multi-religious democracy.’

Outlining his plans for Muslim Americans, Biden had said, “Muslim-Americans are essential to the American fabric, and working with Muslim-American communities is critical to ensuring that Muslim-Americans are uplifted and empowered, and that their issues of concern are addressed within our democracy. ”

The Biden-Harris administration has been vocal against the human rights violations under the BJP government headed by Modi. “In Kashmir, the Indian government should take all necessary steps to restore rights for all the people of Kashmir. Restrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the Internet, weaken democracy,” said Biden’s campaign website.

Harris, herself with Indian links, has been more outspoken on the thorny issue of Kashmir than her boss. When Kashmiri Muslims were forced to live in brutal lockdown following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, Harris had famously assured Kashmiris that they were not alone. “We have to remind Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world,” she was quoted by TIME in October 2019. This was when she was still trying to win support from her party members in the Democratic primaries. She had said, “There is a need to intervene if the situation demands.”

While PM Modi was quick to congratulate Biden after the latter was sworn in as 46th President of the United States, the latter is yet to respond to the series of tweets posted by the Indian premier. Also going against Modi and his party is the former’s open support for Trump in 2019 at a rally in the US. Modi had come under flak for proclaiming Abki Bar Trump Sarkar (This time, we want a Trump government). This was largely seen as a spectacular diplomatic disaster by Modi given the perception of Trump as someone who routinely practiced, professed and propagated prejudice and hate.

Biden built his campaign on the basis of providing a ‘healing touch’ to Americans and ending the politics of hate in his country. It seems that he’s realised that including Indian-Americans with the BJP/RSS links would prove to be counter-productive in his desire to achieve a hate-free America.

Joe Biden's decision to dump Indian-Americans with RSS/BJP links from new administration may not be coincidental

Welcome

Obama Administration staffers of Indian-American origin, who also worked on the Biden campaign, have been reportedly excluded due to their alleged RSS/BJP ties.

These allegations were reportedly brought to the Biden campaign by over a dozen Indian-American organisations.
President Biden has remained inclusive in his picks for key positions in his cabinet and transitionary team, including Sameera Fazili, an Indian-American of Kashmiri origin, who has recently been appointed as the Deputy Director of the Biden Administration's National Economic Council.
Furthermore, in addition to being an advocate for international solidarity with Kashmir, Fazili was one of the prominent voices in the South Asian community against the abrogation of Article-370 in Occupied Kashmir and has a track record of participating in protests in the United States over the Kashmir Issue.
Individuals with RSS/BJP links have not found a place in the Biden Administration, while secular Indian-American organisations have maintained the pressure on the Biden-Harris Transition Team to keep such individuals on the sidelines.
Congressional candidate Sri Preston Kulkarni lost the elections after strident opposition from Indian-American organisations and former US Congressperson Tulsi Gabbard also lost significant political mileage.

United States President Joe Biden has nominated around 20 Indian-Americans, including 13 women, to key positions in his administration. However, the list has excluded some Indian-Americans who had worked on the Biden campaign, allegedly due to their RSS-BJP links.
According to a report in The Tribune, Sonal Shah and Amit Jani have not made to Biden’s list of nominated Indian-Americans to be appointed in his administration. They have been excluded allegedly due to their links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Sonal Shah’s father, who has served on Biden’s unity task force, was the president of Overseas Friends of BJP-USA and is the founder of RSS-run Ekal Vidyalaya. Shah has reportedly raised funds for Ekal Vidyalaya, according to the report.
Jani was the ‘Muslim Outreach’ coordinator of ‘Name Biden’ campaign. His family reportedly has ties with PM Modi and other BJP leaders
The exclusion of Jani may have been the case of lax vetting, it said.

According to the report, those with RSS-BJP links have not found a place in Biden’s team because secular Indian-American organisations have urged his transition team to keep such individuals on the sidelines.

The Democrats may have been more cautious about including those with the BJP-RSS links in the government following renewed activism by organisations opposed to the Hindutva project and also after witnessing the fate of such candidates, said the report citing sources.
