I believe another big issue here is the question of media reporting and individual caring. In unfree countries, everything is subject to approval. One cannot report freely, ask questions freely, face the official narrative freely.

Censorship and control go extreme. Absolute power does not rest in people, so, people develop apathy. Everything feels plastic or fake.

Without referring to any specific country, for example, if the dear leader wants to visit a certain locale by car, all the nasty and dirty stuff along the road, (such as trash dumps, dirty, smelly creeks, ruins, broken infra) is walled off, and on the walls they put slogans and pictures beforehand.

In those societies, deep seated apathy is well set in. No one cares. One can see human excrement near bushes (especially in villages nearby cities) and one daily sees people public urinating in cities (for instance all the street cleaners on electric tricycles or community guards at the gates because lack of public toilets) at every step, and in places you cannot walk on the sidewalk without stepping on someone's spit and phelgm, but, literally, no one cares. Further, one goes to a newly built shopping mall, enters the restroom, and sees horrible, disgusting things that normally belong to underdevelopment.

Yet, no one takes picture of any of these. No one makes a video and post online. No one complains. No one gives a flying care about anyone. Those places are societies of absolute non-caring.

This must be largely because people in those places are politically castrated. Their popular will is stunted, controlled and adjusted according to the will of the One. So, people know they cannot change anything of, by and for themselves. Of course, nice things such as new roads happen. But, they happen outside the sovereign power of the people.

So, when comparing societies, these political and social differences must be taken into consideration.
