In a visual treat, Kathak and folk dances of Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries will be seen together this Republic Day, as a group of students of a school here will perform during the parade, marking the Indo-ASEAN ties. They will be among the 770 students who will take part in the grand celebration at Rajpath on January 26.

In an unprecedented event, leaders from the 10 ASEAN members — Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Laos and Brunei — will be the chief guests in the Republic Day celebrations.

“A total of 150 of students from the Mount Abu Public School in Delhi’s Rohini, will present a colourful performance, dressed in the traditional attire of the 10 countries. Some of them would also be in Indian costume, representing the 25 years of partnership of India with ASEAN,” a senior official said today.

A preview for the media was held here, with some of the selected students sharing the excitement ahead of the big day.

Deepti Singh, 13, a student of Class 8 at the Mount Abu Public School, dressed up in a traditional filipina women costume, said, “We are so thrilled to perform on Rajpath. I will be representing the folk dance of the Philippines. And a few students will do Kathak.”

Anushaka Sharma, 12, said, “I will represent the Malaysian culture. We did some research on Internet and saw videos, and it took us about a month to get the hang of it. But, we learned so much about other countries.”

There will be a total of five performances by the students, including two from the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi government, and one each by the groups from the North East Zone Cultural Centre and the South Central Zone Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Culture.

“The students from the South Central Zone, Nagpur, will perform the Baredi folk dance related to cattle farm culture and those from the North East Zone, Dimapur, will do Sangrai folk dance of Tripura, performed by Mog tribe in the month of April,” Deputy Director (Physical Education), Delhi’s DoE, Harjeet Kaur, said.

Students of the Rani Chennamma Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Jahangirpuri, will be the first to perform, with a song ‘Bharat Ke Rang’ and the Oxford Foundation School, Najafgarh will give a performance themed on ‘Shikshit Bharat, Sashakt Bharat’.

Asked how many slum children would be participating in the grand celebrations, Kaur said, “Most of the students coming from the South Central Zone are slum-dwellers, and many students of the school in north west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, are also from slums.”

“Most students are from Classes 8, 9 ad 11, and a few students fro Class 7 also. They have practiced really hard on Rajpath and are now raring to go,” she said.

18 bravehearts to be bestowed with National Bravery Awards – 2017, 3 of them posthumously

Eighteen children, including seven girls have been selected for the National Bravery Awards 2017. Three of the bravehearts are being awarded posthumously. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will award these future leaders of the society at a function in New Delhi on January 24, 2018. They would then participate in the Republic Day Parade 2018 at the Rajpath, where they would be one of the main attractions of the event.

The coveted Bharat Award is being conferred on 18 year old Km. Nazia of Uttar Pradesh who raised her voice against the illegal gambling and betting, which have been rampant for decades in her neighbourhood. She courageously faced and endured threats to her life but did not give up her fight.

The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award is being conferred on 14 year old Late Km. Netravati M. Chavan of Karnataka who sacrificed her life in an attempt to save two boys from drowning.

The Sanjay Chopra Award is being given to 17½ year old Master Karanbeer Singh of Punjab who rescued several precious lives from death with his tireless efforts and indomitable courage.

Master Betshwajohn Peinlang (14 years) of Meghalaya, Km. Mamata Dalai (7 ½ years) of Odisha, and Master Sebastian Vincent (13½ years) of Kerala are being given the Bapu Gaidhani Awards. Betshwajohn with his fearless act of bravery saved his brother from being burned alive. Mamata Dalai dragged her friend from a crocodile's jaws with her valourous and bold action. Sebastian bravely and fearlessly saved his friend's life from an inevitable mishap on a railway track.

The other recipients are Km. Laxmi Yadav (Chhattisgarh), Km. Mansha N, Master N. Shangpon Konyak, Master Yoaknei, Master Chingai Wangsa (all from Nagaland), Km. The selection was made by a high-powered committee comprising representatives of various Ministries/Departments, Non-Governmental Organisations as well as office bearers of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).

President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind and several other dignitaries will host receptions in their honour. Several States too are organising functions to honour them at the State level.

The National Bravery Award Scheme was initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare to give due recognition to the children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service and to inspire other children to emulate their example.

It was in 1957 that two children - a boy and a girl - were first rewarded for their presence of mind and courage. Since then ICCW decided to confer national awards on children every year.

In 1987-88 ICCW instituted the Bharat Award for an exceptionally outstanding, meritorious and gallant deed. The other special awards include the Geeta Chopra and Sanjay Chopra awards (instituted by ICCW in 1978) and the Bapu Gaidhani Awards (instituted in 1988-89).

The awardees receive a medal, certificate and cash. Eligible awardees will be granted financial assistance until they complete their schooling. Some State Governments also provide financial assistance to them. In addition, ICCW provides financial assistance under its Indira Gandhi Scholarship Scheme to those undertaking professional courses such as engineering and medicine. For the others, this assistance is provided till they complete their graduation. The Government of India has reserved some seats for the awardees in medical and engineering colleges and polytechnics.

Since the inception of the scheme in 1957, ICCW has given awards to 963 brave children - 680 boys and 283 girls.

In an unprecedented event, leaders of all the ten Asean member countries will be chief guests at the ceremonial parade at Rajpath on January 26.

Earlier, Nirmala awarded the 'Raksha Mantri Padak' and commendation cards to the winning cadets at an investiture ceremony held at the camp.

For the first time, an Income Tax Department tableau will roll down the Rajpath during the Republic Day parade, showcasing its special anti-black money drive that was launched post demonetisation.

The tableau will depict the Operation Clean Money (OCM), its salient features and people’s contribution towards the drive which was launched by the I-T department on January 31 last year.

Its two editions have been rolled out by the policy-making body of the I-T Department, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), till now.

“The tableau will showcase the OCM which is an initiative of the taxman against black money,” a senior official said.

“As the drive against black funds is a major flagship of the government, the tableau will speak about clean money and how it can be used to create a strong country,” the official added.

He said this will be the first time that the department’s float will be a part of the Republic Day parade on the Rajpath, which witnesses representations from the armed forces besides various states and ministries.

Last year, the tableau of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) — which was touted as India’s biggest tax reform since Independence — was part of the January 26 parade.

The float, the official said, will depict how clean money is required for the nation’s development and how it is important for the citizens to join hands in this ambitious drive.

The words ‘OCM- Festival of Honesty’ will be displayed prominently on the float, the official said.

The OCM was launched by the government and the CBDT in order to check black money generation and tax evasion in the wake of the November 8, 2016 demonetisation of two big currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

The CBDT has said that demonetisation and the subsequent OCM led to an overall increase of 20 per cent with respect to the people who file their I-T returns.

The I-T department had conducted 900 searches between November 9, 2016, and March last year, leading to seizure of assets worth Rs 900 crore including Rs 636 crore in cash.

The searches had led to the disclosure of Rs 7,961 crore undisclosed income, according to official data.

During the same period, the department conducted 8,239 survey operations leading to detection of Rs 6,745 crore of black money, it had said.
