Bharat Forge first came into major limelight in defence sector when Defence ministry officials asked Baba Kalyani if they can manufacture artillery shells at height of Kargil war when the world witnessed a sustained barrage of artillery firing , the biggest world has seen after World War 2 .

Bharat Forge since has emerged has a major player when it comes to the development of artillery systems in India and has already has introduced five artillery systems and their Bharat 52 a 155 mm/52 cal artillery gun has been grabbing world attention due to the aggressive approach adopted by Bharat Forge .

Bharat Forge in less than 10 years wants to be major artillery systems exporter in the world and have been given export clearance to market their Bharat 52 ,Bharat 42 and other artillery systems in their product line up to prospective countries .

Bharat Forge already has tied up many International vendors for supply of artillery systems in five categories of 155-millimetre guns. Indian Army has combined requirement for nearly 4000 such guns and there is equal opportunity for the company to grab more orders in Indian Armies artillery modernization program under which will see existing systems conversion of the 130mm to 155mm calibre .

Bharat Forge recently inaugurated a new ordnance equipment factory in Pune to manufacture barrels, breech, muzzle brake for artillery systems and tanks like the T-72, T-90 and Arjun. Bharat Forge is also working closely with Defence R&D Organisation Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAG) project, to build a more powerful 155-millimetre/52-calibre gun, with an ambitious range of 60 kilometres, and a weight of just 12 tonnes.

The design aspect of ATAGS seems to be directly inspired by Bharat Forge’s Bharat 52 artillery systems and there is a clear sign of components commonality between two artillery systems. Bharat Forge is also working closely for development of indigenous Mounted gun systems (MGS) since Army has requirements for more than 800 such systems .

Bharat Forge does have ambitious goals set for next decade and company already has taken various initiative in terms of investments in infrastructure ,facilities, machinery and technical collaborations tie-ups which will ensure that Bharat Forge will be one of top private defence sector company which will dominate India’s artillery manufacturing company

We needed a few hundred of these guns , MoD has been terrible on the artillery front.
