Bhagat Singh’s home to be conserved

FAISALABAD: The district government has allocated Rs3.5 million under Sohana Lyallpur Project for rehabilitation and renovation of the house where Bhagat Singh lived as a child.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Noorul Amin Mengal told newsmen that the district administration had formed Lyallpur Heritage Foundation (LHF) to preserve historical buildings and monuments.

The LHF has declared school where Singh studied and his house as a national heritage sites and decided to preserve them. Mengal said under the project, the boundary wall, rooms, the veranda, gates of Government Boys Primary School (where Singh studied) as well as his residence would be preserved and rehabilitated.

Few people know that Singh’s house has almost vanished and no memoriam has been built at the place. After partition, Singh’s house in Jaranwala along with 38 acres land was allotted to Fazal Qadir Virk who had migrated from Chak Virk in Parvinda, district Gurdaspur, India.

His son now owns the property. Singh’s house has a berry tree, a mango tree and small room believed to have been his bedroom. A safe and a closet believed to have been used by Singh remain in the room which has narrow entry. The room is nearly 15 feet below the current ground and entry to it has become difficult.
