Beximco Group, a Bangladeshi corporate giant, has exported 6.5 million Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) gowns to the USA.

With this, Bangladesh joined the select group of countries that manufacture world-class, large-scale PPE to US brand Hanes for ultimate delivery to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), says a press release.

To mark the occasion, a ceremony took place at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday where State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam joined the US Ambassador Earl R Miller to see off Beximco's first shipment of PPE to the USA.

Beximco Chief Executive Officer and Group Director Syed Naved Husain said, "In just two months, we've unleashed our world-class manufacturing, technical and design talent to switch over and start making personal protection equipment and help increase the supply of PPE which is urgently needed in Bangladesh and worldwide."

"Bangladesh was well-positioned to become a new hub for PPE manufacturing. This would help keep people safe and secure worldwide while helping Bangladesh`s economy and ensuring that the large workforce of 4.1 million in the garment sector can still make a good livelihood", he added.

With a goal of becoming a major global player in this sector in the next three years, the company has set up a new PPE Industrial Park, just a 10-minute walk from Beximco Industrial Park.

In addition, it has hired the top global consultants, and are investing and setting up comprehensive vertical facilities for PPE products which will include all levels of PPE Gowns, coveraals, masks, etc.

this beximco owner played his cards well... kudos
why don't they try to win contracts from FEMA?

it’s a good start, diversifying critical supplies is essential.

There are two manufacturers of Remdesivir generics in Bangladesh now, this BEXIMCO and then there is a prior licensee of SKF.

It will set up a plant in Detroit to make masks as demand surges for protective gear in the US, the nation with the most coronavirus cases

Beximco Group, Bangladesh's renowned textile company is set to build mask factory in Detroit as demand surges for protective gear in the United States.

Bangledesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam and US Ambassador Earl Miller on Monday sendoff Beximco Group's first shipment of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the US, MSN reported.

Bangladesh's Beximco Group said it will set up a plant in Detroit to make masks as demand surges for protective gear in the US, the nation with the most coronavirus cases.

The Dhaka-based conglomerate, which started selling the generic version of Gilead Sciences Inc.'s antiviral drug this month in the South Asian nation, will invest $20 million in the Detroit plant, said Syed Naved Husain, chief executive officer of the group's textile business, Crains Detroit reported.

The company will also invest $30 million on a plant at home, he said.

Beximco's textile unit is tapping new opportunities as luxury brands from New York to Paris scrap garment orders amid the pandemic. The company expects the Detroit plant to be ready in nine months, while the one in Bangladesh will start production in four months, Husain said.

"This comes from a process we've been at for more than a year," Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Wednesday afternoon when asked about the plan during a coronavirus response briefing.

Detroit had been recruiting a Bangladeshi company to manufacture jeans in the city, Duggan said, but when the Covid-19 outbreak took hold, the company brought in partners and pivoted to making personal protective equipment.

The company will initially supply N95 masks in Detroit before expanding to other parts of the US, Husain said.

"Nobody picks Detroit at random. This is a result of (Detroit Economic Growth Corp. CEO) Kevin Johnson and the DEGC team and our economic development team," Duggan said. "I think it's time we start to make clothes back in the United States, and we've been working on that for the last year or two. And I didn't expect PPE would be the first plant to come ..."

The mayor said the city is looking for a site for the factory.

Beximco said Hanesbrands Inc. bought 6.5 million personal protective equipment items from the company to supply to the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Monday.

This is an interesting development.
Detroit, once the American motor city is in ruins.
I remember back in 2009 talking with colleagues about buying a house in Detroit using a credit card as they were selling for as low as $1,000. However that scheme quickly faded once we found out the new owner has to pay all the back taxes owed. Some of the taxes were as much $30,000 to $40,000.

If you call 911 there you have to wait 45 min. By then either you are dead or your house is burning. I was in windsor ontario few years back and cross ambassador bridge out of curiosity to visit Detroit.

There any many abundant industrial complex there. Hope beximco will get good tax breaks.

Will Bangladesh benefit from this ? Or only beximco and it's CEO Salman fattu Rahman.

It will help beximco. They probably got good tax breaks and low capital cost. As detroit has the cheapest industrial land available.

It does not matter i believe personally. Beximco is a BD brand and to grow eventually we have to grow globally. The benefit will flow back to BD eventually as it has for all global companies and their home countries.
