Brimstone 2 Backgrounder
____________________________________
Description & Purpose:
Brimstone 2 takes the proven Brimstone missile and replaces the millimeter wave (mmW) radar seeker with a semi active laser seeker (SAL) and the shaped-charge warhead with a blast fragmentation warhead. Brimstone 2’s modular, modern design combines the advantages of a powered missile qualified to the fighter environment with the precision of a SAL seeker and the
low-collateral damage profile of a 25lb warhead. This technology insertion of low-cost, off-the-shelf components provides a reliable solution for today’s Close Air Support (CAS) mission from manned and unmanned weapons platforms.
A complete weapon system comprised of a launcher and three missiles, Brimstone 2 provides persistence and stowed kill capability to today’s fighter aircraft. The missile system’s modular design and compatibility with current M-299 launcher systems allows for quick single-missile integration on smaller unmanned air vehicles. Brimstone 2 can be used in a variety of roles providing quick response and low collateral damage in today’s urban environments and CAS scenarios.
Customer(s):
U.S Air Force is very interested in a powered weapon that compliments JDAM and SDB in the CAS mission area from fixed-wing platforms including A-10C, F-16, F-15 and Predator and Reaper unmanned air systems.
General Characteristics:
Physical: Missile ~ 71in long, 7in diameter, weight 110lbs
Launcher ~ weight 200lbs
System = launcher and 3 missiles = 530lbs
Performance: Release Altitude ~ surface to 42,000 ft.
Release Speed ~ subsonic/transonic
Carriage ~ +6g
Release ~ climb, dive, or level
Range ~ to 25km
Fly out footprint >90 degrees off-boresight launch
Growth: Modular, software based design allows integration of future warhead,
propulsion and seeker solutions.
Brimstone 2 takes advantage of key Brimstone capabilities including: through-the-
weather, off-boresight, INS mid-course guidance, navigation and control capability against fixed and moving targets, and proven integration on high-speed, fixed-wing platforms. The integration of a semi active laser seeker and blast fragmentation warhead make Brimstone 2 a flexible choice for today’s close air support mission against fixed and moving targets. Concepts of operations include targeting from the launch platform via modern laser systems such as LANTIRN and Sniper XR, or releasing Brimstone 2 through-the-weather and hand-off to a second party laser targeting source.
Brimstone 2 is compatible with a wide range of air, land and sea platforms. It can be mounted to fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned air vehicles, ships and ground vehicles. Fixed wing aircraft such as F/A-18, AV-8B, A-10C, F-15E and F-16 can integrate Brimstone 2 using the current 3-rail launcher. This launcher contains 14 inch lugs and MIL-STD 1760 interface and was designed and qualified to high speed fighter environments. The launcher may also be mounted on any rotary wing or UAV systems that accommodate a 500lb store. The missile itself is also compatible with the current Hellfire M-299 launcher, which can be used for integration on Predator UAV, SH-60 and other rotary-wing platforms. Compatibility with canister launchers allows Brimstone 2 to be fired from a wide range of surface vessels and land vehicles.
Brimstone 2 offers the warfighter a number of advanced benefits. On fixed-wing fighter aircraft and high endurance UAVs, Brimstone 2 can engage targets significantly off-boresight, through-the-weather and throughout the launch platform’s maneuvering envelope. These attributes when combined with Brimstone 2’s range enable on-station persistence and the ability to hold large areas at risk. On rotary-wing aircraft these same attributes allow pilots to launch missiles without having to position their aircraft on a particular altitude or heading which enables them to take greater advantage of terrain masking.
Because of the simple platform-to-weapon data set which only requires current position and target position, Brimstone 2 offers a network centric operations design compatible with all current on and off-board sensors and targeting devices.
Background:
Brimstone is currently carried on the RAF Tornado and is being integrated on the RAF Harrier. Brimstone 2 takes this proven weapon system and incorporates a semi active laser seeker and blast fragmentation warhead.
