Blaming US outrageous, unfounded: US diplomat

Sunday, January 13, 2008
By Ansar Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Former Army chief Mirza Aslam Beg on Saturday said that he had some solid information with him endorsing the reports that Benazir Bhutto became the victim of an international plot authored by the Americans.

Talking to The News here on Saturday, Beg showed his reluctance to share this information with the media but offered himself to an independent commission comprising respected retired judges of the Supreme Court as demanded by the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM).

The former Army chief said that the PPP former chairperson was assassinated for deviating from what the Americans wanted her to do. "I have a lot of information on the basis of which I conclude that Benazir Bhutto became the victim of a US conspiracy," the former chief of army staff said, adding that he would not appear before any commission made by the present regime or comprising judges of the existing superior judiciary.

Beg said that Ms Bhutto had come to Pakistan, ending her self-exile in October 2007, with a clear US agenda but later distanced her from the same, which became the reason for her assassination.

Beg said that he had with him the details like as to what had happened in the background, what the Americans wanted to achieve, how Benazir Bhutto became the stumbling block and whom did she contact.

While the US embassy in Islamabad has already termed the reports connecting Washington to an international conspiracy behind Benazir Bhutto's assassination as "completely outrageous and unfounded", Beg is the second high profile retired general to have offered himself for testimony before an independent commission to endorse that the US is behind Benazir's killing.

Former ISI Chief Lt Gen (retd) Hamid Gul has already offered him for testimony. Gul too insisted that Ms Bhutto was made a scapegoat by the international players conspiring against Pakistan.

Gul, who was one of four persons nominated by Ms Bhutto in her October 2007 letter sent to the president in case she was killed, confirmed to this correspondent the other day that he got an indirect message from Ms Bhutto before her death in which the slain chairperson of PPP had conveyed to him that she was under pressure to include his name in this list. As reported by The News on Friday, similar indirect contacts were established by Benazir with Baitullah Mahsud and Dr A Q Khan.

General Gul told this correspondent on Saturday that after consulting Benazir's messengers, he would make their names public. According to Gul, Ms Bhutto had changed the script of the influential world capitals and for this very crime she was assassinated.

Lt General (retd) Jamshed Gulzar Kayani, former deputy chief of ISI, who was amongst the then serving generals who had voiced their opposition to the post-9/11 Islamabad's war on terror policy, also shared the similar view that Benazir's killing was part of an international conspiracy executed with the active connivance of local players to create such a situation in Pakistan that suits those hell-bent to de-nuclearise the country.

Among the retired generals, Lt Gen (retd) Talat Masood, at least, has a different view. Talking to The News on Saturday, Masood termed the reports about the international plot behind Benazir's killing as getting into "conspiracy syndrome" and said that unstable Pakistan did not suit the US or the world. "This is irrational approach," Masood said adding, "instead of getting into such things our emphasis should be on investigation."

About those involving international players in Benazir's assassination, he said, "It is unbecoming on part of educated class to get involved into such conspiracies."

Right now, raising controversies without proof, is as good as setting Pakistan in flames.

It is the time for calm and without the turbulence already prevalent that can cause immense emotional outbursts, leading to chaos.

Once the elections are over and the situation stabilised, all these conspiracy theories can be investigated and the truth discovered.

In fact, who knows if these loose comments are actually not being made at the behest of foreign powers to bring Pakistan into a chaotic state with emotional outbursts from the supporters of the aggrieved parties?

Maybe it is to make things difficult for Musharraf, who is being besieged by external and internal forces as it is!

The difference is that they are Responsible citizens of the country.

We are just Forum members without access to their 'inside' information that they are aware but no one else.

Got the difference?

Stop taking every post of an Indian as suspicious and treacherous!

We are equally concerned, since whatever happens in Pakistan, also affects us!

Well even if we start believing the ex army and ISI generals, even then i personaly feel BB was at fault here, why because she had remained the PM of pakistan for two times and i'm damn sure she knew that West only cares for their personal agenda, then why in the gods name she was coming home with their agenda at the top of her list. The reason is simple she wanted to cash the opportunity, the current turmoil in the country to gain the support of the west in paticular the US and inreturn promised a few leveragies like US being allowed to act inside pakistan, IAEA could interogate Dr.Khan and god knows what more, but what she forget was that this would not be as easy as she initailly thought it to be, after all she had to face a strong opposition from the Army, as a result to which she may have decided to distance herself from the West which may ended up in the result of her killing as predicted by the generals. Anyhow its a complex situation for pakistan and we need to examine the situation very carefuly before taking another step. God bless Pakistan

Before going in to speculations we must wait for the results for the probes carried out by different agencies including "Scotland Yard". It would be much better that if someone has any proof he must put before the nation rather putting their findings without any proofs.

And how do you exactly suggest that he puts the proof before the nation? This isnt as simple as it sounds. If it is indeed a conspiracy, they those behind it wouldnt take long to take another live specially if the conspiracy includes at high level. It has to be dealt with great caution and care.

I agree that it is to be dealt with great caution and care but Are you suggesting that another case be put under the carpet. Do remember that this time the outcome of the investigation will have much more impact on the country than ever before.

No i am not suggesting that this case should be put under the carpet, all i'm trying to say is that this matter has to be handle with extreme care and caution, we cannot just afford to loose anyone more.
