After India, Malaysia Rejects China’s One Belt One Road Initiative?

The newly formed government in Malaysia is apprehensive of China’s One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR). The Mahathir Mohamad government is not very keen to participate in China’s One Belt One Road Project. This is a big setback for China after India decided not to be a part of OBOR. While the previous political regime in Malaysia had warm and cordial ties with China, the new regime wants to review the infrastructural cooperation, especially the OBOR Project.

The former government led by Najib Razak had a ‘Pro China’ approach and signed several pacts with China. A major rail link and a deep sea port formed the major highlights of these pacts. But now Malaysia might give a big jolt to China’s One Belt One Road initiative.

Mahathir Mohamad has said that the dubious deals with China will be scrutinised and reviewed. He also stated that he will look to lessen the large magnitude of debt on Malaysia. He has put the high-speed rail link project between Malaysia and Singapore to termination. This is Malaysia’s first change of regime in 6 decades and surely not a very favourable one for China.

Will Malaysia Break the Chinese ‘OBOR Dream’?
The One Belt One Road initiative by China is seen as a part of its dream to revive the conventional silk route. The One Belt One Road initiative was instigated in 2013 to build a global nexus of railways, ports and roads. First India and now Malaysia has expressed apprehensions about the same.

China had envisaged Malaysia as being one of the brightest spots for its One Belt One Road initiative. With problems in other Southeast Asian Nations, Malaysia was one of China’s favourite allies and prospects. But under the new government, Malaysia has sent out tremors to China’s intentions. On the other hand, seeing Malaysia resent the One Belt One Road initiative, India might have felt pleased. What will Beijing do now seeing its plans derailing?

Malaysia looking forward to improving bilateral ties with China - Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia is looking forward to improving bilateral ties with China.

Noting that China has emerged as an important economic powerhouse, he said this influenced the relationship between both countries, especially on the economic front.

“China is different now...when we established relations with China, it was a very poor country, a third world country, very backward. But now, China has made tremendous progress.

“We find China now the biggest and a valuable trading partner for Malaysia...so our policy is of course to improve the relationship,” he told a press conference here, today.

Dr Mahathir was asked to describe Malaysia-China relations after 45 years of diplomatic ties.

The prime minister also said his visit to China in April would among others, focus on the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative.

He also said Malaysia would state its stand on the initiative after the visit.– Bernama

The Wall Street Journal has a bombshell story (paywall) about China’s overseas influence, based on recently uncovered meeting minutes of the previous Malaysian government led by Najib Razak, and interviews with “people in position to know the events, among them a former official of Mr. Najib’s government.”

• The documents reportedly show that “Chinese officials told visiting Malaysians that China would use its influence to try to get the U.S. and other countries to drop their probes of allegations that allies of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak and others plundered the fund known as 1MDB.”
• This included surveilling WSJ reporters in Hong Kong who had been investigating 1MDB, the Journal reports, including by “full scale residence/office/device tapping, computer/phone/web data retrieval, and full operational surveillance.”
• But that’s not all: Chinese-funded infrastructure projects were reportedly planned in Malaysia at “above market profitability,” with the excess funds created intended partly to “settle the 1MDB debts.”
• The East Coast Rail Link, which turned into a $16 billion project, was originally estimated by a Malaysian consultancy to cost just $7.25 billion. The project, a key part of Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road initiative, has been suspended by the new Malaysian government under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. New terms are reportedly being negotiated.There are many other juicy details in the piece, including that Xiào Yàqìng 肖亚庆, chairman of China’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, had said at a meeting on June 28, 2016 that Xi Jinping had personally approved the infrastructure initiatives.

The allegations have been denied by Najib, as well as by the Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur, according to Malaysiakini.

• Lim Guan Eng, the current finance minister of Malaysia, said that he is “interested to have a copy of those minutes” that the WSJ examined, and would “pursue” anything that is “in black and white” regarding improper deals, the FT reports (paywall).
• “We know that the price (of projects with China) is inflated, but whether there was such a deal, I have to check,” Lim added, according to Channel NewsAsia.

Newspapers are for peasants. Mahathir used China threat propaganda from western media to depose Najib and seize power. After all, Malays inherently fears the Chinese and Communist. Politicians are snakes. As soon they won election, same shit. Its all about power and money. If Mahahtir have guts, spill the beans of the contracts. Mahathir is smart, he attacks US, but never towards the "Deep state". He knows China won't retaliate like the US. He is a coward.
