...And here are views from me as a champion debater from college years...
...However his opponents were not talking about 850 AD, they are talking about 2013 AD...
I watched them before you did, learned about results on May-23rd(from one of the debaters) the very day debate happened. & Posted news on May-30th & videos on July-8th, before this thread, can't a self-proclaimed champion debater read.!! Save ur phony wishes of peace for someone else Mr.Self-Proclaimed-Champion.I don't think you sat down and watched all the debates.
And hence the ignorance.
peace
Nops,,,, 286-vs-186 was pretty good outcome from a muslim`s perspective keeping in mind that debate happened just the day after Woolwich fale-flag incidence. While islamophobia was red-hot all over media.Thats a pretty horrible count considering it was a pretty straight forward question. ...
Claims and Counter claims and it goes on and on and on......
Blames and Counter blames and it goes on and on and on....
Btw he said very well..... One can't conclude something taking examples of 1% and just ignoring the rest 99%.
Adding to that ..... One should learn to discriminate between Good and Bad. Abusing a whole community because of some is nothing but sheer stupidity!
Well this is my opinion and I follow that.
o but da dabates shud go on....u can not zip thm up
yaaara, I have watched all the participants in this debate. And here are views from me as a champion debater from college years.
Just like so many other $tupid debates on "Islam is this, and Islam is that",
this debate is $tupid as well.
A debate means one side says "XYZ is good in a particular context ABC".
The other side must respond that "XYZ is BAD in a particular context ABC".
Why? because XYZ cannot be absolutely good or bad. We must agree on the context ABC before the start of the debate.
Mehdi Hassan in this case is loud mouth, but utterly lame. He talks about Alkhawarizmi who died in 850 AD.
However his opponents were not talking about 850 AD, they are talking about 2013 AD.
So just treat this as a typical chest thumping by those who desperately want the term Islam to be in positive light, and in their desperation, they are willing to hitch their wagon to Tom dick Shankar and Abdullah, even a loud mouth lame debater like Mehdi Hassan.
peace to you.
May you live long and prosper
May you have great spiritual experience during this holy month.
Amen

the debate was NOT on "Islam in 2013" so doesn't matter what era opponents were locked in, they were talking on "Islam" irrespective of era.
The forum (Oxford Union) voted 286 -vs- 186

Thats a pretty horrible count considering it was a pretty straight forward question. How would the votes change with a few more high profile bombings is what you have to see. Generalization is an inbuilt quality of the human race. Whether in anger or as humor. It is done and will continue to be the case till the existence of mankind.
Muslims must accept that their countries are behaving like uncouth tribals, or worse they are behaving like medieval Christian kingdoms.
And thus we got the tribal/medieval diseases.
Not Islam
but the fake followers of Islam aka Islamists are the biggest culprits,
but the rest of the Muslims have contribution in it too.
Unless we the majority Muslims improve our countries, make them tolerant, make them civilized, we (and not others) will continue bringing bad name to beautiful religion of Islam (all religions are beautiful at the core).
As we have the medieval Christian disease, the possible solution would come from there too.
They saved their religion by kicking out politics and state out of it.
We the Muslims must save and sanctify our religion by kicking out state and politicians out of our mosques.
And if we do not,
We'll be stuck with medieval Christian behavior and character.
