He arrived in the early of 1960's. And guess what? We won test series in New Zealand in 1967 and followed it up by defeating the mighty WI in 1971. Gavaskar's 771 runs in a test series by a debut player is still the best. I will consider my defeat when a new BD player gets more than 800 runs in a 5 test series on debut.
Add to that we defeated Australia and England in India long before 1967. Thirdly if you want to consider the era from 1932-1947 dont forget pak and bd were part of Indian test team too. And till 1971 you guys were part of Pak Test team.
Well, New Zealand was the Zimbabwe of that time...
Technically speaking, India's peers in test cricket include West Indies, New Zealand and much newer Pakistan. Comparatively, West Indies and Pakistan fared far better than India as its contemporaries... New Zealand though had a rough initial phase...
We were indeed part of British India and Pakistan but cricket was never taken seriously in Bangladesh till the late 1990s...
