A total of 5793 entrepreneurshave dodged repayment of Tk 18,689 crore as of June this year, according to thelatest report of Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of Bangladesh Bank (BB).

The list updated recently by theBureau includes only those who defaulted on repayment of loan from minimum Tkone crore and above each.

The figure is 8.90 per cent ofthe total outstanding amount that stands at Tk 125,924 crore, according to theCIB report.

Of the total outstanding amount,banks had recovered a total of Tk 1,010 crore during the period.

In the wake of rising defaultloans, BB has directed all commercial banks including state-owned, specialized,private and foreign ones for taking effective measures to recover both disbursedand default loans from the loan-defaulters.

"We have directed all banksfor taking effective measures to recover both disbursed and default loans fromthe defaulters including the top 50 bank loan-defaulting companies," saida high official of the central bank while talking to The New Nation onSaturday.

Besides, the banks have beenasked to take immediate steps to quickly dispose of the cases on defaultingloans with different courts including the money loan court to expedite theprocess of recovering the amount," said added.

The report shows that of the totaloutstanding loans, a sum of Tk 706crore was rated as substandard, Tk 505 crore doubtful, Tk 2006 crore bad orloss and Tk 2737 write off amount.

Of the banks, Sonali Bank has thehighest number of 393 loan defaulters with Tk 5376 crore default loans againstthe total of Tk 24159 crore outstanding loans followed by Agrani Bank with 268default clients having Tk 2896 crore default loan and Janata Bank has Tk 1,471crore default loans with 321 defaulters.

Besides, a total of 381 borrowersof the foreign commercial banks evaded of Tk 224 crore loans, 247 borrowers ofspecialized banks Tk 2178 crore, and 3953 borrowers of private commercial banksTk 5954 crore.

Among the private banks, a totalof 3953 borrowers evaded loans of Tk 5954 crore.

Of which, 114 borrowers of IFICBank default payment of Tk 554 crore, 115 borrowers of The City Bank Tk 444 crore, 74 borrowers in Uttara Bankof Tk 405 crore, 198 borrowers of South East Bank Tk 433 crore, 321 borrowersof Islami Bank (BD) Ltd Tk 348 crore, 184 defaulters of UCBL Tk 358 crore and17 borrowers of ICB Islami Bank of Tk 235 crore.

However, the report shows thatclassified loan amount was nil in Al-Arafa Islami Bank and Bangladesh CommerceBank Ltd as these banks have engaged their sincere efforts to collectoutstanding loans.

Outstanding amount of both thebanks reached at Tk 3390 crore and Tk 275 crore respectively during the period,according to the report.

The CIB report also reveals 50top loan defaulters in private entities.

Total outstanding amount inprivate sector stood at Tk 5968.45 crore of which Tk 4732.57 crore wasclassified amount.

Why majority of the defaulters are related to jute, carpet, fabrics and textile ???? Is it intentional or there are some specific reason for that...
