Banning Indian dramas
This is with reference to the news report
Private TV channels barred from airing
Indian dramas (The News, September 29). I
have observed inherent contradictions in the
policy framework structured by the leaders
of India and Pakistan. On one hand, the
governments of both countries claim of
taking practical measures to benefit the
common man and, on the other, we see such
steps taken the authorities. In my view,
airing Indian dramas on Pakistani channels
could, in no way, affect the viewership of the
local dramas since there is no dearth of good
Pakistani dramas. Instead of this ban,
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory
Authority should focus on examining the
content and ban only those dramas that are
culturally unacceptable or could affect the
Indo-Pak relations. The quality of Indian
dramas should be assessed and those
dramas which pass Pemras censor board
should be allowed to go on air.
Indian programmes on Pakistani TV channels
could bridge the gap between the two
neighbouring countries. This untimely ban
will only discourage those who are striving
hard to develop friendly relations between
India and Pakistan. We need to come to
terms with the fact that at the end of the day,
such steps fuel hatred and mistrust. If we are
to improve the Indo-Pak relations, the right
step will be to root out those factors which
contribute to straining relations between India
and Pakistan.
