Banning any party isn't best way: British Foreign Office Minister, Warsi
Visiting British Foreign Office Minister Baroness Warsi on Tuesday said she does not believe that the banning of a political party is the best way to win the battle of ideas but the public can decide what kind of future they want for Bangladesh, reports UNB.
"I don't believe the banning of a political party is the best way to actually achieve a winning in the battle of ideas," she told reporters at the Foreign Ministry after a lengthy meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni.
The UK Minister also said most things should be solved through a democratic process.
"I'm a democrat, by that I believe most things should be solved through a democratic process." She, however, favoured those ideas that are in the public domain and said the public can decide what kind of idea and what kind of future they want for Bangladesh.Responding to a question on the next crucial polls, Warsi said there is a need for all political parties to be part of the election process because it is important.
"To have a proper election, you need proper representation of all political parties in those elections for making that acceptable to all," she added.Warsi said she spoke to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni on exactly that issue (next polls).
She said Bangladesh has an opportunity at the next election to display that real democratic maturity by showing that they can hold an election which is free, fair and inclusive.
"At the end that it produces a result which is acceptable to people of Bangladesh," she said adding that Bangladesh has a stable democracy.On how the polls will be held, she said what the process they adopt is going to be a decision of Bangladesh and it is not that a foreign country to determine in which way the election will be held.
Warsi highly appreciated the Shahbagh protest for its peaceful manner. "People have right to protest those protests should be free of violence. The Shahbagh protest is going on in a peaceful and in a productive way."On discussion with Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, the UK Minister said she had a very constructive meeting which was extremely warm. "We talked about protest in Shahbagh, war crimes, war crimes trial, the election preparation, trade issues and human rights issues and Rohingya issue."
