Bangladesh's Payra shipping port could fall into Chinese hands

Draft at Payra is hardly 12 plus meters. This is not ideal for sub movement.

My understanding is that you need plenty of draft, say at least 15 to 20m for ingress and egress of subs in clandestine fashion to their storage pens. Bangladesh decided to build their own sub base at Sonadia/Matarbari for this reason. Draft at Sonadia is deeper, easily exceeding 20m.

Off topic, but wouldnt you think a substantial submarine base at Cox's Bazar is a little too close to the Myanmar border?

That facility will be for Bangladesh Navy and is being placed there exactly because it is close to Myanmar so we can keep an eye on Myanma Navy movements. This is intentional.

Yea that part is understood.

But god forbid there is ever a land war.

Investing so much so close to the border?

Well within range of SSM.

Not to say vulnerable to capture.

Again, unlikely and pretty close to doomsday scenario for BD.

But just a thought.

I'm just skeptical of BD leadership and thought process.

I always think about all the ex-PAF planes in Chittagong that were wasted during the '91 cyclone.

Generally speaking CHT provides the most in terms of strategic depth.

Keep in mind we have only 170 miles of border with Burma. Every bit of this border is mountainous and impregnable to modern armour. A full scale conventional invasion is simply impossible for a poor country like burma.

Now every inch of this border( & hundred km of burma airspace) is under surveillance by our ground based AD radars. We will buy more modern AD radars from EU to deploy at Matarbari.

AWACS will be bought for surveillance from air. BGB is implementing smart border management in this sector.

Not to mention almost one third of our Army is currently deployed in CHT.

Simply put, burma can't deploy any long range or theater centric assets in Arakan or in Chin state without being noticed by BD armed forces.

We need strong point defence in Chittagong division. Something 'Iron Dome ' like.

Well - multiple Iron domes like in Israel and South Korea. The South Koreans I believe have at least three layers of protection (Patriot, L-SAM/S400 and THAAD), no idea about Israel.

The Chinese DID NOT LIKE the (defensive) South Korean THAAD deployment. All Korean car sales in China were immediately halted and LOTTE supermarkets closed amng other Korean exports, which was a huge impact to the South Korean Chaebols.

Compared to a strong defence, some half billion dollar in trade with our miserly neighbour, isn't much.
