Dinajpur, June 18 (UNB) – For the first time in Bangladesh, a magnetite (iron ore) mine has been discovered at Isabpur village in Hakimpur upazila of the district, bringing new hopes for the country’s economy.

The Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) made the groundbreaking announcement on Tuesday morning following extensive examinations after drilling a well for two months.

A 400-foot thick iron layer was found 1,750 feet beneath the surface and it stretches over an area of 6-10 square kilometres, said GSB Deputy Director Mohammad Masum around 11:30am.

He said the percentage of iron in the mine is 65 while that in Canada, China, Brazil Sweden and Australia is below 50.

The GSB official said apart from the presence of gold, there are copper, nickel and chromium in the layer. “Limestone was also found at a depth of 1150 feet,” he said, adding that the discovery of iron mine is the first in Bangladesh.

He said the GSB found the existence of mineral substances drilling a well at Mushidpur, 3 kms off Isabpur village, in 2013. “In line of the survey, digging began at Isabpur village on April 19 last after long six years. While drilling from 1380-1500 feet, we saw rays of hope,” he said.

GSB Director General Zillur Rahman Chowdhury along with other senior officials visited the site on May 26 when he hinted at the discovery of the country’s first iron mine.

The Geological Survey of Bangladesh started the digging after taking 50 decimals of land from farmer Ishaque Ali of Isabpur village, 11 kms of the upazila headquarters of Hakimpur, on lease for four months at Tk 45,000.

GSB Deputy Director (Drilling Engineer) M Masud Rana said a 30-member team of experts did the drilling work in three shifts.

The discovery of the iron mine has opened up economic prospects for the country, too.

While the extraction of iron ore will be viable economically, it will also create employment opportunities for many, said insiders.

Hopefully it’s economically significant.
Rajshahi, Dinajpur region is close to Chotanagpur plateau in India. That plateau has one of the richest deposit of metallic ore and coal in the world. India's most of the mineral found there. Same geology also extent up to North west Bangladesh. So it is very probable that Rajshahi, Dinajpur region also contain a lot of metallic ores. There are already 5 coal mine sitting in the same areas holding 3.3 billion ton coal. So iron ore mining on economic scale can not be ruled out.

The weight of total discovered volume is, [{(6 +10)/2 sq.km x 1000 x1000} x 400ft/3.28] x 7.8 t/m^3 = about 7.5 billion metric ton. @105.79 per ton being today's market rate of IRON ORE, the total market value of this mine is $750 billion. It is a quite big mine.

But how big? I give one example. Japan's production of steel is about 100 million ton per year. With 65% iron content, this mine (7.5 billion ton) can feed the giant Japanese steel mills for about 50 years. So, it is very large.

However, I think extracting ore from an underground mine is more expensive than it is from the mountains. Anyway, BD has discovered a new wealth that should be extracted fast.

Almost impossible to extract considering local opposition to relocation of the people. We could not extract coal from that region either.

People like Anu Muhammed and Professor Shahidullah do not really know what is a modern economy where people are employed in the high-value industries. These guys want people to live on subsistence farming in the locality and keep on singing "Amar Shonar Bangla----------" forever.

The local people should receive some incentives like paid employment in the industries nearby. However, the govt has so far failed to encourage rich people to build industries. So, it is difficult to convince people to sell or lease their lands. Many people would like to remain farmers instead of Colliery coolies.

In the case of BD, the land belongs to the owners but not the wealth below it. In the case of the USA or Japan, anything underground also belongs to the Owners of the land. Govt must think of something like joint ownership of the underground resources. This is what I think.

Joint ownership will probably make the entire mine economically non viable. Mineral mining is always expensive when it is underground.

Please don't criticize few good people like Anu Muhammad. This planet earth has been screwed over by the capitalists with industries and widespread rape of the nature and environment. A few sane voices are still left.

Hasina bibi out of all the places in BD wanted to build that coal fired power plant near Sundarbans. Anu Muhammad was pretty much the only visible person who protested.

Bold part: If you really want to get rid of the curse of industrialization, consumer products, or environmental pollution, you have to bring back the world population to, say, 1.0 billion. Everyone will have then quite a chunk of land for farming, rivers/ ponds full of fishes, tasty chickens without poultry farm, cows tilling the land, boat-racing in the rainy season, bull-racing in winter, Lathikhela, etc.

If you can do it all, evils will just evaporate into the thin air. But, can you do it? The world population will rise to a staggering 9.8 billion by 2050 from 7.7 billion today, this is what the demographics people predict. So, how do you suggest people in a small BD can survive with 210 million people at that time if they remain without employment in industries and producing millions of tons of consumer goods that also will create more and more garbage in the Dhaka streets?

By the way, Anu Mohammed could not stop the building of coal-fired power plant 16 km north from the edge of Sunderbans. However, I think super-critical technology will be used there. The chimney is very tall and the wind generally blows from the Sunderbans towards the power station which causes the smog/smoke to dissipate and flow towards the north.

By the way, we are surrounded by the smogs from China and India already. সমুদ্রে শয়ন যার শিশিরেতে ভয় কি তার?

The world population will rise to a staggering 7.2 billion by 2050 (?) from 4 billion today, this is what the demographics people are predicting.
I highly doubt you are dumb or misinformed enough to think this but do correct it. Currently, would population is over 7.7 billion and by 2050, it'll near 10 billion people.

Its very tough to build anything right now. Be in mines, power plants or even large scale industries. Thanks to overpopulation and new protest mafia. While many protest are genuine others are existent only for extracting money.
