What's new

Bangladesh's exports hit all-time high of over 52 bln USD in FY 2021-22

.
where did I mention socio economic indicators??!!

All I said was GCSE and A-Level results.

They are ahead and the gap is widening every year.

BD'shi children are far more into education than the average white child - just need to go into a school with a significant proportion of BD'shi children and they are far better behaved than one that is mainly white "middle-class" even.

By 2025, then BD'shi children should be up there with the Chinese/Indians in terms of educational achievement, but it would take another 10-15 years for them to catch up in the socio-economic ladder.

.
However, unofficial figures collected from the central bank show import expenditures of 11 months (July-May) of the just-ended fiscal year would reach $81.49 billion, exceeding exports by $34.32 billion.
In a developing country, it is difficult to control imports. There are demands for luxury goods and the govt needs tax money. This trend continues for decades and the deficits are covered with money borrowed from monetary organizations.

I do not think, BD is the only developing country to face a huge trade deficit. I believe the situation will start changing. The only way is to export more and the govt/ private companies have set a goal of exporting $100 billion worth of goods by 2030.

This is attainable even before 2030. BD is now a well-known source of textiles that will be more famous in the coming years. Chinese labor costs are increasing and the consumer countries will go for cheaper sources. BD is one such source.

I think it will take longer.

About 80% of Chinese kids go to private schools.

And about 25% for Indians.

I think If you exclude private schools - Bangladeshis are ahead of Indians.

I am in UK and know what I am talking about.

Most BD’shi children have private tutors and they go to very well run state schools where they make up at least 50% of the cohort.

By 2025 they will match Chinese.

Why the Trumpian obsession with trade deficits?

Very few countries run trade surpluses.

A country earns dollars in many ways.

In Bangladesh, deficit is funded by remittances.

In USA, it is funded by printing the dollar.

Private tutors and private schools are not comparable.

One is a step ladder and the other is an express elevator.

Sorry you have no idea about education and the UK.

Best state schools deliver similar academic results to private ones.

My old school(50% BD’shi) in my town is one of the best in the UK and results are not far off selective private schools.

Once you get into Oxford and Cambridge you are pretty much set up for life - in the UK they are making it harder for private school students to get into Oxbridge.

No as most of Singapore exports are re-exports via foreign multinationals.

You know as it’s trade volume is much larger than its economy.

BD exports are almost always domestic companies.

A large portion but I wouldn't say most of it. Manufacturing is still an important pillar and the current account surplus contribute significantly to our economy.

Youre comparing a small city state with BD, a country of 170 million people. Also Singapore is sorrounded by countries which also had decent good development, and it has a very strategic maritime location, which made it interesting for superpower like USA and its European allies. Of course they also had wise leadership in Yew.

Lee*

Not only that but Singapore was fairly developed after the British handed over self-government internally.

In 1959(when it had full internal government) it had a per capita income 5 times higher than that of BD that was still being held back by Pakistan for another 12 years and a vicious civil war at the end as well.

Compared to South Asia definitely, but globally I wouldn't say it's spectacular.
