Bangladesh's exports hit all-time high of over 52 bln USD in FY 2021-22

they pay good salaries if you limit fdi you stop your economy

I am not saying that FDI is all bad.

Let me give you an example between BD and India in the home electronics and appliances sector.

India got a lot of FDI in this sector and so both its domestic market and exports is served by foreign companies that set up factories in India.

BD does the same thing but with domestic companies.

For small countries like yours and Singapore, you are better off with FDI as you are too small to set up your own domestic industries.

BD is large enough population wise to develop a lot of its own domestic industries.

PS -BD economy is growing 7-8% a year with only 2-3 billion US dollars of FDI per year.

Bangls is no handicap and English is not a necessity for development. East Asian countries developed without being good in English. We fail to realize our lack of planning to advance the country in scientific, technological and industrial fields have led to the slow development of the country and then propose English as a remedy to fix it. It is better to know at least but certainly not a pre-requisite. Our subcontinental people are still mental slaves of the British.

This.

We definitely need to diversify but the textile sector hasn't even reached it's full potential yet. The textile alone can bring upto 100-150B.

We Bengalis seem to be good in textile somehow. Historically it was the Muslin Bengal was known for and made a fortune by exporting it, in 21st century textile seems to be the goose laying golden eggs. We have to diversify but any industry we diversify to must be in addition to textile, that is we should not leave our dominance in textile just because we managed to diversify.

Tell me how you learn when critical mass of literature and research is written in English?

You automatically restrict yourself to small volumes that are translated.

And then you have problems with stuff lost in translation.

Our businesses have to hire Indians because of a dearth of English speakers in BD.

I am afraid, Bangla is going to keep Bangladeshis backward.

singaproe 65 years indepandant

Youre comparing a small city state with BD, a country of 170 million people. Also Singapore is sorrounded by countries which also had decent good development, and it has a very strategic maritime location, which made it interesting for superpower like USA and its European allies. Of course they also had wise leadership in Yew.

BD otoh is sorrounded by hostile millitary dictatorship Myanmar and a India that was semi-communistic and underdeveloped (and for the most still is). BD did not stabilize as a modern state until the late 1980s.

U.K. built Singapore and Hong Kong as safe haven for their interests.

U.K. deserves the credit for their development.

Not only that but Singapore was fairly developed after the British handed over self-government internally.

In 1959(when it had full internal government) it had a per capita income 5 times higher than that of BD that was still being held back by Pakistan for another 12 years and a vicious civil war at the end as well.

The guy clearly has no idea what he is talking about and is comparing apples to oranges here.

Britain chose the winners and losers during the colonial era.

Based on who was most subservient to them.

Singapore and Hong Kong were amongst the pliant stooges.

Banya and Brahmins were amongst them as well.

They have done well but at the cost to their race.

Yes, this is exactly what has been happening in Bangladesh since 1972. When most other countries including European ones have adopted a policy of learning English, it is BD that has taken a policy of forgetting English.

All the science, technology, medicine, or knowledge-related original papers are written in English, and we are unable to enter the entire sources of knowledge because we lack proficiency in the English language.

It’s akin to tying both our hands.

When we are already so far behind.

Tell me - who is even educated enough to translate a handful of books?

Let alone translating millions of journals and thesis.

Who is going to fund all these translations?!!!

What about the search algorithms?

No escape from garments until we learn English!!!!

Garments will easily see us through this decade but we need to learn English to thrive in the next decade.

Bro, Bangla is a massive handicap.

You learn by reading and listening.

What journals, books and online lessons are in Bangla?

It’s a massive handicap even for first generation Bengali immigrants in the west.

Thankfully, British Bangladeshi kids are now on par with middle class whites. But if their parents spoke English - they would be even higher.

You cannot compare east Asia with Bangladesh.

East Asia (China, Japan and Korea) was already industrialised whereas Bangladesh only started in the 1980s.

And Bengal suffered two famines under British rule and was systematically deindustrialised.

We cannot progress without speaking the Queen’s English.

Are you sure Bangladeshi kids are on par with White British kids in socio-economic indicators?

Why do you have to answer this stupid question? If not par now, our BD kids can be made at par with any other kids by education, and if they can be made rid of religious abstraction or fatalism.

In the present context of BD, I am however not optimistic about getting rid of the religious abstraction. This will keep our people bound to ignorance and superstitions.

No English knowledge is a major advantage, trust me. Its not about being a mental slave its about international business.

Early stages Bangladeshi students were way back, but recently that trend has changed and Bangladeshi students are amongst the top students in the UK. Check the recent census data.

Is this for the overseas students or the BD origin UK born students.
