The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently imposed informal restrictions on renewal and issuance of work visas to the Bangladeshis, said recruiting agencies and visa seekers to the Emirates.
Bangladeshs Consul General Dr Abu Zafar in Dubai said they have been receiving such reports for nearly two weeks, but the UAE authorities have not informed anything officially about it.
We got some reports from Bangladeshi employers here that the visa authorities were denying visas. However, the big employers of the Emirates have not made any such complaints yet, he told The Daily Star over phone on Thursday.
The UAE, which now hosts estimated one million Bangladeshi workers, second highest number after Saudi Arabia, has been a sustained labour market for the last couple of years despite global economic recession.
Dr Zafar said as the public offices have not opened fully after the Eid-ul Fitr, they could not formally get to know exactly what happened that the UAE put some sorts of restrictions.
Unless we learn something officially, we cannot surely say it is restrictions on recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, he said adding You see major employers have not made any complaint.
Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (Baira) said they received complaints that the UAE authorities are not renewing visas of the Bangladeshis working under Emirati companies. However, renewal is on in the cases of the foreign companies there.
Issuing of new visas is also slow, Baira executive member Hasan Ahamed Chowdhury told The Daily Star, adding that it will take a few days more for them to understand exactly what is happening.
He said the government has to act promptly to learn the reasons why such restrictions have been imposed on the Bangladeshi workers. This is urgent because the UAE is now recruiting the highest number of workers, he added.
