i seriously don't get it.... some of my hindu friends eat beef and says it's okay and their is nothing in their religion that prohibits it... there are others who do not touch beef and i usually do not eat beef while out with them, out of respect.... ( note the beef eating friends are only two people... from kolkata, the rest of my friends are from different parts of northern india...) what's going on if someone could explain... (someone enlightened in hindu religion/ or is a hindu)

It entirely depends on culture and geographical variations. Hindus in different parts of the country eat different diets. I myself am completely vegetarian, and do not eat any kind of meat, including chicken and seafood. In Gujarat where my mother's family is from, almost all Hindus are completely vegetarian and and do not eat any meat. Jains have a stricter requirement. In northwest India in general, Hindus are completely vegetarian. The most vegetarian states in the country are Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, as well as the Jammu division of JaK. Beef is banned in all those states. Hindus in North India also don't eat beef, but they do eat other meats such as chicken and mutton. In East India(Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and Northeast India) Hindus are less strict with their diets, and eat seafood, pork, chicken mutton, and sometimes beef. Probably the most liberal state with regards to diet is Kerala, almost everyone eats beef there. Hinduism does not have strict requirements like Islam and Christianity, and anyone can be a Hindu if they surrender to the Brahman
