Bangladesh to dredge 10,000 km riverway to improve navigation

The government of Bangladesh has launched a mega scheme to dredge 10,000 kilometres of riverways in the country to improve inland river navigability.

The programme will be inaugurated on Saturday. Announcing this on Friday, the Ministry of Shipping said in a Facebook post that the State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury will inaugurate the dredging work of Old Brahmaputra river in the Sherpur district on Saturday.

Speaking to the official news agency BSS, the Shipping Minister said that the purpose of the dredging work is to ensure round the year movement of goods and passenger vessels safely. It will also help the agriculture and fisheries sectors by improving water flow in the rivers, said the minister. The dredging work will be carried out on 178 rivers of Bangladesh.

The dredging work is being carried out by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at a cost of Taka 4371 crore. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2024.

Earlier, in February the minister had told parliament that the excavation of 470km of river routes under the Bangladesh-India river protocol had already begun. It will be jointly financed by the two countries.

Dredge and build levies..... BD can beat and manage climate change

Have to say that the news from Bangladesh nowadays is mostly development and economics based , in strict contrast to the rest of the subcontinent.
Whatever your political inclination, the BD government has a single minded focus on development.

.
Improving river navigation can offer an alternative mode for transporting military hardware and commercial goods.

. .
Dredging increases water capacity of the river, this in turn helps flood management and alleviates water shortage issue in dry season.

There are target 178 rivers to be dredged by June 2024 with a cost of only Taka4371 crore ($520 million). Can someone tell me how it is possible? Hasina govt is as usual asking the reporters to write fictions on its behalf almost every day.

Bangladesh must have possessed the Aladin's Lamp in its hands.

BD is next Asian tiger. This country is often in news for good reason. I congratulate BD once again.

10,000 km at $520 mn, that's an average allocation of $52,000/km. How much does it typically cost to dredge?

A dredging is not just a line. It is the volume of soil/earth that has to be removed. So, $52,000 figure is not valid.

For example, the volume of a km stretch of dredging may be 1000m length x 3,000m width x 3m depth, making the volume 9,000,000 m3. It is certainly not possible to dredge by $0.006 (Taka5.0) per m3 or $0.006 per meter of length.

In the case of all these fictitious projects, the govt people say something that is just not true. It is Bangladesh or Hasina style to talk but not work. May be Hasina wants to see the reactions in different Forums like PDF.

The journey of a thousand Miles starts with the first step. This initiative is a step in the right direction

Tell me what are the second steps when the first step says an Earthwork at Taka5.00 per m3? It is another of BAL hoax to please some people.

I am not questioning your ability to understand math. However, many BAL people learn from very strange math texts that even Newton or Jadab did not know about.
