Bangladesh shelters Rohingyas, int’l community must step up
Update: 12:58, Sep 15, 2017
Bangladesh has extended all possible assistance to the Rohingyas, given the violence and persecution unleashed on the community in Myanmar. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas had fled in fear of their lives from their homeland into Bangladesh.

However, the international community has not reacted as it should have to the ethnic cleansing and the genocide being carried out in Myanmar. At the UN Security Council meet on Wednesday, the oppression of the Rohingyas was condemned and a call was made to halt the atrocities. The situation has reached such proportions, that it is not enough to merely condemn and issue statements.

It is clear that the Myanmar government has adopted a policy of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingyas. The Rohingyas are being driven from the country in a planned manner. This is an international crime, according to the UN Charter and other such charters. Already 400,000 Rohingyas had been sheltering in Bangladesh and now another 370,000 or more have been added. It is unfortunate that Bangladesh for no reason at all, it having to bear the burden of this burgeoning number of refugees. And yet here is no effective initiative being taken against Myanmar for this international crime.

As Myanmar has failed to provide its citizens with security and a certain ethnic community is victims of genocide, the international community including the UN must take responsibility to protect them. The Bangladesh government has highlighted the situation to the ambassadors of various countries and heads of international agencies. The international community is well aware of what is taking place there. The UN secretary general Antonio Guterres himself has termed this ‘ethnic cleansing’.

The Myanmar government itself had formed an international commission to look into the problems of the Arakan state. If the recommendations of that commission, headed by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, were followed, then the Rohingya problems would be resolved to a great degree. The international community now must force Myanmar into implementing those recommendations. Bangladesh’s prime minister has proposed a separate safe zone for the Rohingyas. With astute and proper diplomatic handling of the situation, it will not be too difficult to resolve the crisis.

Rohingya face food, medical crises in Bangladeshi camps
Although secure, thousands of Rohingya sheltering in Bangladesh now face tough living conditions
September 15, 2017 Anadolu Agency
UNICEF has appealed for $7.3 million to provide emergency support to Rohingya children over the next four months.

The Rohingya people who have escaped Myanmar are throwing together shelters with polythene and bamboo. Some are starving. Local residents are giving food to the new arrivals, with some of the refugees eating at nearby homes.

Mohammad Ali Hossen, an administrative official, told Anadolu Agency: “Rohingya are staying in 14 different places in Cox’s Bazar. Due to the overwhelming crowd and manpower crisis, relief operations run separately and it will take more days to bring discipline.”

Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, another official, told Anadolu Agency that an over 300 extra police had been assigned to keep order.

Meanwhile, India has offered help to Bangladesh to deal with the refugee crisis. Aid will be air lifted in consignments, the first tranche of which was due to arrive on Thursday in Chittagong, southern Bangladesh, on an Indian Air Force plane.

Anyone still remember that Turkey was going to pay for the refugee cost in Bangladesh? Anyone have a full detail and type of payment Bangladesh is going to receive? Have Bangladesh receive anything yet?

Turkish aid agency is on the ground. They probably collect items from local market. Turkey sent 1000 tons to mm though

They are right, it's wrong to make Bangladesh to shoulder the entire burden, the international community should pay for it.

I just wish it was the same when Myanmar were butchering their ethnic Han Chinese population (Kokang) only just 1-2 years ago too.

Why did China not capture the ethnic Chinese area?

China can hardly complain now when it is sheltering the rogue regime from tough UN censure.

Where is Sultana Kamal?

Where is Abul Moksud?

Where is Khaleda Zia?

i think next election nobody should vote for these politicians. common educated people should stand for vote.

we need peoples leader not Jongi or dalal

China is actually all talk no action. Look at Doklam, South China Sea, Taiwan............Days of Mao are long gone.

Don't know about the other two, but you won't hear a peep from crazy Sultana Kamal unless someone attacks Hindus in Bangladesh or Shanti-Niketan culture.

That is her singular promoted cause célèbre, laughably so, because her husband happens to be Hindu.:-)

Since most Rohingyas aren't Hindu - she doesn't really care.

Even some Hindus think she's batsh*t crazy.

Funny how "all talk no action" has led to net increases in Chinese territory in both the South China Sea and Donglang, the latter of which is under full Chinese control.

You guys are sounding more like Indians every day, in which massive losses in territory (Aksai Chin) and unilateral retreats are counted as victories.

Who gave a sh*t when Myanmar was persecuting their ethnic Han Chinese population? Where was the global outcry, and the calls for international help?

Double standards.

Bangladesh became a nation in 1971 despite Chinese opposition to it under Mao reign then.

Mao or no Mao, there are limitations to what Chinese can do.

Well China claims all of SCS yet can't do anything when US sends there ship there. China even offered to return US drone that they found in SCS. And about Doklam media calls it a settle mate despite China talking all big for ao long.

Don't blame others because you didn't care what happened to Ethnic Hans in Myanmar because that would've upset Myanmar and our interest there would be in danger. So you just let them die.

India should tighten its borders across Bangladesh.

Can't afford more of them here.

So you just let them die.

Kokang were Burmese citizens, but Rohingyas are not.

So what is your excuse for letting them die?

How many Indian Rupees did Hasina get? Indian Rupees aren't worth much, so I hope she asked for a lot.

We are not strong enough or prepared for a war now. Still we're doing whatever we can diplomatically. You didn't even try that.

Maybe....but I recognize his efforts in the Korean war. The best leader of Modern China.
