More than 120 Bangladeshi troops will lead reinforcements sent to the strife-torn Sudanese state of South Kordofan, where Khartoum government troops are battling forces loyal to southern Sudan, UN officials said Thursday.

The United Nations is sending the peacekeeper reinforcements to the state's capital Kadugli to turn its main base there into a safe haven for refugees, he added.

Heavy fighting in the state on the border between north and south Sudan has raged since June 5. Khartoum forces are battling militia aligned to the south's Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).

"It's important that the compound of UNMIS can become a sort of safe area where civilians are effectively protected," France's UN ambassador Araud told reporters after a Security Council meeting.

A UN peacekeeping spokesman said the company of Bangladesh troops had been sent to Kadugli and that the area around the UN compound had become a safe haven to protect civilians.

UN peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy told the Security Council that up to 6,000 people were camped out around the base. The United Nations estimates that 60,000 have been displaced by the fighting in South Kordofan alone, including about 70 percent of the population of Kadugli.

The Security Council is to get a briefing on Monday from former South African president Thabo Mbeki and UN envoy Haile Menkerios on attempts to seal a peace deal between the north and south governments.

Araud said that if there was no agreement by Monday the Security Council would have to "express itself in very strong terms to call for an end to the violence."

I am sure they will do a good job.

Managing the refugees and ensuring their safety is a very important, though difficult task.

Under which Chapter are they being deployed?

Peacekeeping or Peace Enforcement?

.
The expeditions always synced with peacekeeping,
seems now the tide has changed. As it seems they'll be neutralizing
that zone from enemy rebels. Eventually, the usual peacekeeping.

@ O ! I see you understand the term, "Peace Keeping " and "Peace Enforcing" ? Had you being in Sudan ? It is ofcource under Chapter-7 i.e, Peace enforcing.

@ What a trajedy ? We, Pakistan and Indian are their in Sudan for last six years and we infact helped in dividing Sudan, North and South Sudan. Darfur is in the process of dis-intregation !!!!

.
Its sad but ethnicity always plays bigger role than the religion.

We did not help dividing it. rather UN itself is body that was created for safeguarding interests of neo liberals/west

So you would rather have North Sudanese keep slaughtering the Southerners?

Well, I should know about UN operations.

It was a part of my assignment.

Actually, UN missions are not that easy to operate. In actuality, though they are to operate under the UN directions, there is a whole lot of 'advice' from their own govts based on their political sensitivity.

It is a credit to the UN Missions of all countries that still manage to produce some results.

It may not sound politically correct, but Drafur is a case of colour and ethnicity problem, even though both sides share a common religion - Islam!

Well Md Akram maybe a Bengali, but he is a Muslim too. And he is as good a Muslim as any other Muslim person.

He is perturbed that the warring sides are Muslim and none (especially Muslim countries) to patch up the difference.

Is that a very wrong sentiment to hold?

Well Mukti Bahini maybe treacherous to some, but how did they come about?

In the same way the Janjaweed Arabs are persecuting the black Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit ethnic groups.

Janjaweeds feel that the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit ethnic groups are traitors.

Why?

Because they want equality in their own country Sudan and not be an appendage and second class to the Arab descent Sudanese.

Is that a crime?

We must not get emotional over issues and instead judge with fairness and be bold enough to admit one's own mistakes rather than heaping it on others and feeling that they are treacherous.

@ " O' tai tu china china lage",(O' that's why I may saw/know you). I saw you some where either at Juba or Khartoum or at UN Training Centre at Nairobi(Kenya). You had been leen and thin and in olive green uniform with a jungle cap. But I am in doubt about your rank. You said that you participated in our liberation war than you might have been Field Marshal as because your Indian Chief who is now in 5 days "Honey Moon" trip in Bnagladesh was 2/lt at that time. I was there man and holding your leg when you had been distributing your surplus rations to the local people. Subsequently after eating the food 3 died and 15 were admitted to the hospital. There was a hue and cry after this inccident. It was widely discussed in our NGO's forum.

@ My dear beloved friend, you have not got the point. The day, you, I and Tiki Tam Tam landed at Sudan means two Battalions of India, One Battalion each of Pakistan and Bangladesh landed at Sudan(force Commander being initially the Bangladeshi and later on Indian) could very well conclude that in the forthcoming UN sponsor Referendum of 2011, the South Sudanese would vote complete separation from North Sudan but yet we remain there and pass the time. Why you have brought the liberation struggle of Bangladesh here ????? " Kia sara dush hamara tha ? kuch tumara tha ! kuch hamara tha ! kuch bharat ka tha ! aur shahid ham sublogoka tha !!!!!"

.
South Sudan was a referendum.

I don't think the UN could do anything to subvert it.
