Police in a rural Bangladesh district have banned gatherings for Sunday's Copa América final between Brazil and Argentina following clashes between rival fans.

Police in a rural Bangladesh district have banned gatherings for Sunday's Copa América final between Brazil and Argentina following clashes between rival fans.

Longstanding rivalry between followers of the South American giants boiled over after Brazil's semi-final win over Peru to set up the final against Lionel Messi's Argentina, police said Thursday.

A dispute between two boys over which country played better football turned into a street battle with fans beating each other with sticks and throwing punches in Brahmanbaria, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of Dhaka, local police chief Mohammad Amranul Islam told AFP.

Islam said police were now on alert for Sunday's high-octane Copa America final in Rio de Janeiro, more than 15,000 kilometres away.

"We have told villagers they can't watch the matches on big screens. We have gone to villages and told them they can't hold any gathering during the final," Islam said.

Cricket is Bangladesh's main sport but the country of 168 million people becomes a hotbed of football fanaticism for the World Cup and Copa America.

Millions of Brazil and Argentina fans hoist the flags of their favourite country on their homes and stage street processions wearing team shirts. Trouble regularly erupts.

During the 2018 World Cup a 12-year-old boy was electrocuted to death while putting a Brazil flag on a road pole. A man and his son were critically injured when fans in rival processions clashed in the central town of Bandar.

It's very good decision. Watching football should be banned in Bangladesh, at least should be strictly monitored.

However Bangladeshi people are by birth idol worshipper ( not talking about religion, but all fans make their celebrities sort of deity) .

At first most of them used to idolised Pakistani cricketers ( before Bangladesh go to a position in cricket ) , few idolised Indian cricketers too, and worshiped their idols and used to create trouble in society. Although Pakistani fans were overwhelming majority!

But when Bangladesh go to a position in cricket and also chetona cult introduced, then extreme hype for Pakistan cricket team diminished.

But the idol worshipers are sooo devouted to Brazil and Argentina, that they even beat each others for no reason, and already few people are hospitalised.

(That's also a strong reason western democracy isn't and will not ever be safe in Bangladesh , as already die hard BAL and BNP supporters are idol worshippers to their own deities. But it's different argument) .

So surely football will trigger riot in Bangladesh, if it's not banned, or at least not well monitored.

So football khela nia marmari korle , pasar kapor tuila eisob pagol choda gulare marte marte jail a vora dorkar. Argentina ar Brazil re gujjho dar ( গুহ্যদ্বার) diye dhukiye deya dorkar.

If they could show only 10% enthusiasm and dedication about their own country ( instead of Brazil Argentina BAL BNP or whatever other things ) , we would be one of the strongest and richest nation in Asia, and wouldn't be oppressed by politicians.

So either ban football or make Bangladesh a good football team.

At least riot won't trigger, as if Bangladesh can be a better football team . It may take few centuries though if we work with dedication.

So better banned football and heavily focus on cricket so that bengali can divert to it's own country!
Pathetic. Brazilians and Argentinians probably don’t even know Bangladesh exist

Still hooliganism for them in Bangladesh.

I agree. Still think we should abandon that shit sport called "Criiiikut" that we have spent donkey years playing and got no where. We were born a footballing nation, should continue to play and love.

But cricket has a possibility if well taken care of. Cricket playing nations are few and also it's mostly popular in South Asia.

What is the future of football in Bangladesh? Will we ever play world cup or cab even establish a third rate football club? I doubt.

And now can we do that? We are too busy to think about Brazil and Argentina nowadays.

So where is the time for our own clubs?

By the way cricket is time consuming and specially I stopped watching cricket when t 20 became dominat.

I don't consider it cricket, where your only goal is hit the ball with bat ; solid techniques to play and leave the ball is totally absent in t20 garbage.

So yes partly agree with you. If cricket mean t 20 ,it must be banned. Rather I would watch American football( I hate this game. I just feel like laugh out loud; no idea what made it football, that they play with hands!) instead of t 20.

One day is dying, so now test cricket.

Although it's also not great like past days, still it can be considered as cricket .

But all of us know that a match last 5 days shouldn't be played.

So yes I lost interest in cricket long ago.

But football should not have a place as long as Bangladeshis will act as hooligans.

We are more Christian than pope himself, and hooliganism in football for completely alien countries are big examples.

So let's say ,ban ( or hate) both game and let's try to good something for Olympic games. We can make good athletes or swimmers if govt can fund them.

They might be better choice, govt should fund them, so at least we can end up beating each others for our own people, instead of aliens.

Lmao, Look at the football stadium in bangladesh, its pathetic.

Almost all the football stadiums in in asia uses artificial grass, while we still using real ones lol.

Heck even nepal have better football facilities than us.

Football is a ridiculous activity. I believe Britain, the birth land of football, too is notorious for football hooliganism.

But then most sports are unwanted. The best activity for people anywhere first should be to cleanse their society of disharmony and bring scientific development. Sports can wait.

Just a couple of months ago in India there was a photo of the IPL cricket match stadium lights juxtaposed with the lines of hellish fires of COVID death cremations. Showed the silly priorities of many Indians.

There is a reason for footballs popularity. And it has caste/high class/low class angle as well. You see when cricket was introduced, it was the British who played. We considered cricket as a status game since the white.people.played and back in the days cricket kits were damn costly.

Due to inaccessiblility of cricket, people from poor areas or slum regions adopted alternate sports of contact games like Kabaddi, wrestling and football etc. In India football is very popular among city slum regions or tribal regions. The only investment needed is a ball and not even shoes are required. Most of Indian football players are from indian NE or mostly tribals/poor people from Indian mainland.
It was the same way football evolved in England as well.

Well , there is another reason too. Cricket is time consuming , so it's hard to stick 5 days to watch a draw. ODI is best IMO , still you have to watch all day.

Bold part: Many years ago BD sent a football team to play against a Japanese team, national or what I cannot remember. Japan scored 11 or more goals.

After each goal, the famous Japanese player Miura would bring his hand to the middle part of his body and dance like Michael Jackson. You can see Miura in the picture.

Our shameless players later gave us a good excuse that all these goals were due to artificial grass on the field.

I just remembered the story after reading your post.

This reason is for comfortists. For poor people who don't have any access, football is a pressure releasee. Football is a love culture. Embrace it. Will one ban political parties just cos they clash every day of the year?

Well I am afraid that I am no supporter of democracy. So yes I have no problem or banning all political parties including ruling BAL. A BAKSAL type is better under strict military observation, and under well trained bureaucrats. Not clerk type lower grade bureaucrats of Bangladesh though.

However about football banning isn't necessary though, but a strict observations, specially for the people of brahmanbaria is a good thing. These people are more irrational and emotional than avarage Bengalis.
