What's new

Bangladesh not running out of gas, it hasn’t explored

Pakistan coal production went from 3 million tons to 9 million tons

Compare to China and India
Coal mines in Eastern India were found and exploited during the British Raj centuries ago. Thar coal was found in the 1990's and only started production a year ago. 1000's of MW's of Thar coal powerplants are planned to come online in the coming years. Links to the railway system is in progress. After 40 years of backing imported energy......even the idiots in PPP and PML-N now back Thar coal. No power plant will be approved in Pakistan unless it uses local fuel (Hydro, Solar, Wind or Thar coal). Expect Thar coal production to double every few years, IMO.

To say somehow the British geologist missed large easy to extract deposits of coal near the surface defies logic and explanation

The point about fuel reserves is that they have to be commercially viable. Why would the Brits have any interest in developing lignite mines literally in the middle of nowhere.

Pak is an independent country now and has requirements of fuel. So they had a need to aggressively explore fuel resources in their land. Besides, technology has improved which makes lignite viable as a source of fuel.

As far as Pak having the lowest CAD is concerned, it is not because of Thar Coal. It is simply because it has (sadly) run out of cash/credit to import. It can simply import only as much as it can export. Mathematically, its CAD will be close to zero for some time.

Nathuram ji,

It IS based on that!

Foreign company means paying in precious dollars.

Domestic company means paying in taka and the profits staying home.

It makes a big difference.

@BananaRepublicUK

Kola bhai,

It makes a big difference.

Well, it does. Domestic companies seldom have the capital or the skills to explore less prominent oil or gas fields, unless like ARAMCO they have first made some huge discoveries which they have monetised well.

@Bilal9

Bilalbhai,

Hasina and her business buddies (Summit group and others) created this artificial crisis so they could gain hundreds of millions from importing

This is a silly argument which I have seen made in IND and PAK as well. SHW/The Importeds/The 2As can make their money as well by domestically produced oil/gas or coal as they can on imported. Heck they can make money by counting tides if nothing else is available as the joke goes.

Most of Pakistan's imports are energy imports (about 70%). If it can substitute imported oil, gas, and coal with local fuels.....it will resolve its forex issues. Expanding Thar coal is one factor in achieving this. Historically PPP and PML-N have supported imported fuel.....the oil and gas companies give them good kick backs. Zardari even considered pledging canceling Thar coal development (which was initiated under Musharraf) at some global climate change meet. Today even those idiots are backing Thar coal.....forex situation gives them no choice, as you point out.

Thar coal was not discovered until the 90's (by USAID of all people). British geologists missed finding plenty of mineral resources in its areas of influence.
