'Bangladesh may see Egypt-like uprising'
Dhaka, Feb 12 (bdnews24.com) A senior BNP leader has warned the government that 'an Egypt-like uprising' may take place in Bangladesh.
"The government's failure has created such a situation in the country that might trigger protests like Egypt," party standing committee member Moudud Ahmed told a discussion titled 'Election Pledges and Reality' at the National Press Club on Saturday.
Referring to the fall of Mubarak after his 30 years of one-man rule, he said, "Democracy is not democracy when it turns into autocracy. People in counties like Sudan, Jordan and different countries in the Middle East want democracy like people in Egypt."
About the country's present political situation, Moudud said, "Bangladesh is now under the grip of autocracy in the name of democracy."
He said the recent protests in Munshiganj against the government bid to construct an airport at Arial Beel demonstrated people's anger against its misrule. "Such a pent-up mood now prevails everywhere in the country and this may explode anytime."
Moudud said BNP has planned to gradually intensify the ongoing anti-government campaign and ultimately force the government to step down.
"We are not in favour of taking a whimsical decision on launching a vigorous movement. We are demonstrating patience. That's why we enforced only four hartals in the last two years."
Taking a swipe at the government for its failure to run the country, he said, "Not only the people, but also my friends Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Rashed Khan Menon are criticising the government for its massive failure."
"Tofail Ahmed has said with courage that there had been no development and reconstruction of roads in the last two years. I thank him for this," Moudud told the discussion.
He said the government had also miserably failed to tackle the share market turmoil and improve the law and order situation.
