Bangladesh lifts restriction on travel to Israel, drops ‘except Israel’ from passports amidst Israel-Palestine conflict

Bangladesh is one of the few Muslim majority countries which are blessed with a strong government. The people are respectful of the government decision and policy and see events beyond Greater Bengal as inconsequential.

A beneficial relation with Israel is as much on the cards as opening the country up for eventual graduation from the LDC status. Boasting the most progressive economy in the region, the lucrative soft power boost is where Israel can play her part.

There is no forecast of any monsoon in Bangladesh.
What a very tiny Israel can do to assist a poor country like BD I do not understand. It is too tiny and far away from us. Japan, China, and other developed countries are more in a position to help us with industrialization.

BD should wait for the day Israel establishes peace with Palestinians. We are psychologically attached to Palestine as if it is a part of us. I think almost all people have similar feelings and the govt is unable to supersede this popular sentiment. Even if SA has discarded Palestinians, a tiny BD should not.

Dhaka will burn if GoB does something stupid without getting people's approval.

Israel may not have much to offer you as a people but government is a different matter.

A few open-minded Israeli types (especially women) may come hang out in Goa to relax or go to one of the Indian hill stations as a cheap respite destination a few times a year, Some hotels, watering holes are Israeli owned - but no Indian men allowed in those Israeli hotels.

Who told you that? Huge number of cheap affordable hotels near coastal villages in goa is owned by Israelis (and Russians). Have myself stayed in those several times during my college days. Without Indian tourist those will go out of business in no time. They are mostly friendly people.

Diplomatic relationship with Israel will cause rifts with many Muslim countries including Pakistan and Iran. This will be too heavy a burden on us.

Better we wait for the correct time.

Yes but we the Muslims of the subcontinent are not the back stabber type like the Arabs. BD and Pakistan will burn if any government tries to establish relationship with Israel.

I don't think BD should establish any relationship with Israel, not because we must love and be loyal to the Palestinian Arabs. Arabs are not very nice people and they are some of the most xenophobic people on earth, their dislike of South and South-east Asian Muslims is almost close to hatred. I don't want to shed any tears for this trash. It's because of our mullah brigade and uneducated people who haven't had much experience mingling with the Arabs they have support for the Palestinians.

Recognizing Israel has no benefit for Bangladesh. That country has nothing to offer.

Actually.

If Israel achieves peace with the Arabs. Pakistan BD, turkey Iran malaysia and iran will have no choice but to recognise Israel. What they do with palestine is irrelevant.

Arabs are a cowardly and xenophobic bunch. Look at how they have sold their own off for a little bit of gold.clearly when was the last time arabs did anything good for muslims? It was always the turks, iranis and south asian muslims that has been doing the most for muslims.

So no. Arabs deserve Israel. But do feel sorry for Palestinians . They are the most sold out commodity today.

However all muslims should have an attachment towards al Aqsa. It is the third holiest site in islam. Dont mix opinions about arabs and al aqsa togather.

Arabs not important. Al aqsa is.

Joining other Muslim-majority countries by easing its stance towards Israel, Bangladesh on Saturday, lifted its travel ban to Israel - hinting at a shift in Bangla-Israel relations. Bangladeshi passports which earlier read 'This passport is valid for all countries for the world except Israel' now reads 'This passport is valid for all countries for the world', as per Bangladeshi news site 'Weekly blitz'. Bangladesh which backs a sovereign Palestinian state is one of the 26 countries which did not recognize Israel as a state over the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Bangladesh lifts travel ban to Israel

As per reports, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has confirmed that the passports will no longer feature any restrictions on travel to Israel, as per the international standard. However, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told reporters that Bangladesh still does not recognize Israel. Moreover, in 2009, journalist Salah Choudhury, the editor of the Weekly Blitz, was arrested for attempting to travel to Tel Aviv for a writers' conference in 2003. He was later charged for "sedition, treason, and blasphemy", and sentenced to a seven-year prison term.

Hailing the lifting of the ban, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Cohen tweeted, "Great news! Bangladesh has removed travel ban to Israel. This is a welcome step & I call on the Bangladeshi government to move forward and establish diplomatic ties with Israel so both our peoples could benefit & prosper". Bangladesh has never recognised Israel since its independence in 1971 and a shift in stance may trigger economic trade and technological cooperation, say experts.

4 Islamic nations recognise Israel
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Morocco, and Bahrain forged ties with Israel, recognising the Jewish state for the first time. UAE-Israel ties' normalisation was facilitated by the then-US President Donald Trump after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu held six weeks of indirect talks through Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed. While most nations have welcomed the deal which may 72 years of hostilities in the region, Iran, Hamas have condemned the move raising concerns about the fate of Palestinians in the region. Apart from UAE, Egypt and Jordan are the other Arab nations that have forged peace with Israel.

Bangladesh's move to ease up Israeli comes amid a unilateral ceasefire called by Netanyahu to halt an 11-day military operation in the Gaza Strip, which was later agreed to by Hamas. The latest tensions between the two neighbours were ignited when Palestinians protested attempts by settlers to forcibly evict a number of Palestinian families from their homes and Israeli police measures at Al-Aqsa Mosque, a frequent flashpoint located on a mount in the Old City revered by Muslims and Jews. In retaliation to the police action, Hamas fired more than 4,000 rockets, most have either fallen short or been intercepted by Israeli air defence system - 'The Iron Dome', while Israel's warplanes and artillery have struck hundreds of targets around blockaded Gaza and brought down the 12-story al-Jalaa Building, where the offices of the AP, the TV network Al-Jazeera and other media outlets are located. Israel's fatalities have remained at 12, including one Indian - Soumya Santhosh - a Kerala caretaker, while 232 people have died in Gaza including 65 children.

Passports for Bangladeshi citizens, up until now, have had a caveat written on the document stating that the document was valid in "all countries of the world, except Israel."

Bangladeshhas reportedly lifted its travel ban to Israel in an unexpected move welcomed by the Foreign Ministry's Deputy Director General for Asia and the Pacific Gilad Cohen on Saturday.

Passports for Bangladeshi citizens, up until now, have had a caveat written on the document stating that the document was valid in "all countries of the world, except Israel."

Despite having no formal diplomatic ties with Israel, Bangladesh's home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed to the Bangladesh-based the Weekly Blitzthat newly issued passports will no longer explicitly single out Israel on official travel documents, opening up the possibility for Bangladeshi citizens to legally travel to the Jewish State upon renewal of their passports.

Bangladeshi citizens who have traveled to or attempted to travel to Israelin the past have been arrested and charged with high treason, or threatened with that fate if they ever stepped on Bangladeshi soil again.

This was the fate of journalist Salah Choudhury, the editor of the Weekly Blitz, who attempted to travel to Israel in 2003 to attend a writer's seminar in Tel Aviv. He was subsequently imprisoned and charged with treason, sedition and blasphemy.

Cohen lauded the move and called for the two governments to work towards establishing formal ties, as Israel has done with other Muslim countries in the past year such as the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan, in normalization deals brokered by the United States.

"Great news! #Bangladesh has removed travel ban to Israel. This is a welcome step & I call on the Bangladeshi government to move forward and establish diplomatic ties with #Israel so both our peoples could benefit & prosper," Cohen tweeted.

My guess is BD is going to start trading with Israel without recognising it. The passport move will let businessmen travel there. Sort of like Taiwan.

.
There is nothing great about it

What is the reaction of bangali?

Had it been done Pakistan, it could have cost government to any ruler. What about bangladesh ?
It's great news. Bangladesh has its entire opposition in jail or out of parliament for many years unlike Pakistan where establishment keeps opposition as hanging sword right above every govt for blackmail.
