Bangladesh leads Asia in paying homage to Nagasaki bomb victims
Staff Correspondent | Update: 23:17, Aug 09, 2017
Bangladesh ambassador to Japan Rabab Fatima led the Asian countries in paying homage to the victims of atomic bomb dropped by the US in Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.
Japan prime minister Shinzo Abe, other top officials of the country, and diplomats from different countries offered wreath at Nagasaki City Peace Park on Wednesday morning as a mark of homage to the martyrs, said a press release of Bangladesh embassy in Tokyo.
For the first time, a Bangladeshi envoy has been honoured with the opportunity that glorified the country, said the press release.
Survivors of the attack, bereaved family members of victims, representative of 80 nations including Nuclear States and European Union were also present there.
Japan, this year, is marking the Peace Ceremony of the 72nd anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing, which killed an estimated 214,000 people in 1945.
The programme in Nagasaki was hosted by the Nagasaki prefecture mayor, Tomihisa Taue.
Earlier on 6 August, about 50,000 people attended at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to pay their respect to the victims of that atrocious event.
A one-minute solemn silence followed by prayers was offered at 8:15am (local time), the exact time when the atomic bomb - codenamed ‘Little Boy’ - was dropped by the US from about 600 metres above the Hiroshima.
